David Horsley
David Horsley (March 11, 1873 – February 23, 1933) was an English pioneer of the film industry. He founded the Centaur Film Company and its West Coast branch, the Nestor Film Company, which established the first film studio in Hollywood in 1911. Biography Horsley was born in Stanley, County Durham in northern England. In 1884, the family moved to Bayonne, New Jersey where as a young man he built a bicycle business and ran a pool hall. It was then that he met a former employee of Biograph Studios, Charles Gorman, and along with his brother William Horsley (1870–1956), they formed the Centaur Film Company. By 1910 their operation was producing three films a week, including the ''Mutt and Jeff'' comedies. David and William Horsley, along with other film independents, succeeded in defeating the monopolistic hold on the industry of Thomas Edison's Motion Picture Patents Company. George Ovey
George Overton O’Dell, known as George Ovey professionally (December 13, 1870 – September 23, 1951), was an American film actor and comedian. Ovey was born December 13, 1870, in Trenton, Missouri. He appeared in more than 200 films between 1915 and 1951, but he is best known as the character "Merry Jerry" in dozens of short films known as the "Cub Comedies" that were produced in the mid-1910s by Mutual Films and directed by Milton Fahrney. Ovey died September 23, 1951, in Hollywood, California. Goldie Colwell
Goldie Colwell was an American film actress and journalist who starred in more than 80 films during Hollywood's silent era. She was Tom Mix's leading lady in many Selig westerns. Biography Goldie was born in Tecumseh, Kansas, to John Colwell and Celia Pearson. The family eventually relocated to Los Angeles, where Goldie began working as an actress around 1911; her first credited role was in Joseph A. Golden and Tom Mix's ''Why the Sheriff Is a Bachelor''. She was employed at Selig as Tom Mix's leading lady in dozens of westerns before heading to David Horsley's Centaur Film Company, where she continued to take on starring roles. After retiring from acting around 1919, she became a magazine editor, heading up a new publication called ''The Spotlight''. Mutual Film
Mutual Film Corporation was an early American film conglomerate that produced some of Charlie Chaplin's greatest comedies. Founded in 1912, it was absorbed by Film Booking Offices of America, which evolved into RKO Pictures. Founding Mutual's predecessor film businesses began with the partnership behind the Western Film Exchange, founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in July 1906. The partnership included Harry E. Aitken, Roy Aitken, and John R. Freuler. In 1910, Freuler also formed a partnership with Chicago film distributor Samuel S. Hutchinson, establishing a production entity known as the American Film Manufacturing Company. In early 1912 the Shallenberger brothers (Wilbert E. and William Edgar), Crawford Livingston, and others as investors including Charles J. Roy Watson (August 6, 1876 – June 7, 1937) was an American actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 120 films between 1911 and 1935. Biography Born in Richmond, Virginia, Watson began to act on stage in 1895. He went to Hollywood in 1909. Watson's first work with films was with the Selig Company when he appeared in ''The Hazards of Helen''. Watson was married to, and divorced from actress Jane Keckley. He lived at the McCadden Hotel before moving to a rest home. He died at the Hollywood Hospital in Hollywood, California, on June 7, 1937.
