Jerry Rescue
The Jerry Rescue occurred on October 1, 1851, and involved the public rescue of a fugitive slave who had been arrested the same day in Syracuse, New York, during the anti-slavery Liberty Party's state convention. The escaped slave was William Henry, a 40-year-old cooper from Missouri who called himself "Jerry." Background New York was sympathetic to slaves because it was a free state, and a number of abolitionists lived in the area. Syracuse became an active center for the abolitionist movement due in large part to the influence of Gerrit Smith, from Madison County, and a group allied with him, mostly associated with the Unitarian Church and their pastor, Reverend Samuel May, in Syracuse, as well as Quakers in nearby Skaneateles, supported by abolitionists in many other religious congregations. Other prominent abolitionists from the area were Frederick Douglass, Matilda Joslyn Gage, John W. Jones, William Marks and Harriet Tubman. Prior to the Civil War, due to the work ... Jerrycan
A jerrycan (also written as jerry can or jerrican) is a robust liquid container made from pressed steel (and more recently, high density polyethylene). It was designed in Germany in the 1930s for military use to hold of fuel, and saw widespread use by both Germany and the Allies during the Second World War. The development of the jerrycan was a significant improvement on earlier designs, which required tools and funnels to use, and it contained many innovative features for convenience of use and robustness. Today similar designs are used worldwide for fuel and water containers, in both military and civilian contexts. The designs usually emulate the original steel design, though some are also produced in plastic. History The name of the jerrycan refers to its German origins, '' Jerry'' being slang for Germans. The design was reverse engineered and subsequently copied, with minor modifications, by the Allies during the Second World War. German invention The ''Wehrmacht ... Jerry (WWII)
There are many terms for the Germans. In English the demonym, or noun, is German. During the early Renaissance, "German" implied that the person spoke German as a native language. Until the German unification, people living in what is now Germany were named for the region in which they lived: examples are Bavarians and Brandenburgers. Some terms are humorous or pejorative slang, and used mainly by people from other countries, although they can be used in a self-deprecating way by German people themselves. Other terms are serious or tongue-in-cheek attempts to coin words as alternatives to the ambiguous standard terms. Many pejorative terms for Germans in various countries originated during the two World Wars. English Hun (pejorative) ''Hun'' (or ''The Hun'') is a term that originally refers to the nomadic Huns of the Migration Period. Beginning in World War I it became an often used pejorative seen on war posters by western Allied powers. The wartime association of th ... Thomas Jeremiah
Thomas Jeremiah (died 18 August 1775) was a free Negro harbor pilot, firefighter, fisherman and merchant from Charles Town, South Carolina, in British North America. A prominent resident of the city, he was executed for attempting to foment a slave revolt on the eve of the American Revolutionary War. His execution was controversial even at the time, and he has since become a "representative" for the state of blacks in the Revolution. Biography Known often as Thomas Jerry or simply as Jerry in contemporary sources, little is known of his life details. This includes when or where he was born and whether he was free from birth. At the time, 99 percent of blacks in South Carolina were enslaved and, typically, free blacks such as Jeremiah would have purchased themselves from their masters. Jeremiah's first appearances in the historical record are in 1750s in the '' South-Carolina Gazette'' where he was blamed for running both the HMS ''Jamaica'' and the ''Brothers Adventure'' ...
