Jeremiah S. Gilbert House
The Jeremiah S. Gilbert House is a National Register of Historic Places listings in Fulton County, Georgia, NRHP-listed property in the neighborhood of Perkerson, Atlanta, United States. It is one of the city's List of oldest structures in Atlanta, oldest surviving structures. Jeremiah S. Gilbert was the original owner of the land which is now the Perkerson neighborhood. The Gilbert House is described as significant as the home of one of Atlanta's earliest families, a rare example of fieldstone, mortar, and wood construction, and as a rare existing example of an Atlanta farmhouse. After renovation in 1984, it was opened as a Cultural Arts Center operated by the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs. The house is also designated as a List of historic buildings and districts designated by the City of Atlanta, City of Atlanta Landmark Site. Perkerson, Atlanta
The Perkerson neighborhood (formerly called Perkerson Park neighborhood) is located in Southwest Atlanta, Georgia in NPU-X (Neighborhood Planning Unit). The name change was made by request of residents/members of the Perkerson Civic Association (PCA) in order to keep people from confusing the neighborhood with Perkerson Park which is the large park (49 acres) that serves the area. Boundaries The neighborhood is surrounded by the Downtown Connector and I-75 to the east, SR 166 to the north, the Atlanta-East Point city limits to the west, and Cleveland Avenue to the south. History The area that now encompasses the Perkerson neighborhood was originally owned by Jeremiah S. Gilbert (a farmer) who purchased the land from his father, the first doctor in Fulton County. Various buildings can lay claim to the title of oldest structure in Atlanta. The primary reason that Atlanta does not have an abundance of older structures is that the vast majority of pre-civil war buildings were destroyed in Sherman's March to the Sea, in which General William T. Sherman burned nearly every structure in Atlanta during the Civil War.
