Mallow (Parliament Of Ireland Constituency)
Mallow was a constituency represented in the Irish House of Commons until 1800 and was incorporated by Charter of 1613, with a further charter of 1689. It was a manor borough, the franchise being vested in the freeholders of the manor and the returning officer its Seneschal. It was controlled by the Jephson family until the 1780s. Robert Jephson
Robert Jephson (1736 – 31 May 1803) was an Irish dramatist and politician. Life He was born in Ireland, a younger son of John Jephson, Archdeacon of Cloyne. He entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1751, but left without a degree. He then joined the British Army, with a commission in the 73rd Regiment of Foot (1758), and served in the Caribbean. He left, for health reasons. Jephson then lived in England, at Hampton Court, with William Gerard Hamilton. There he was the friend of David Garrick, Joshua Reynolds, Oliver Goldsmith, Samuel Johnson, Edmund Burke, Charles Burney and Charles Townshend. His appointment as master of the horse to the lord-lieutenant of Ireland took him back to Dublin. He published, in the ''Mercury'' newspaper, a series of articles in defence of the lord-lieutenant's administration which were afterwards collected and issued in book form under the title of ''The Bachelor, or Speculations of Jeoffry Wagstaffe''. The Archdeacon of Cork was a senior ecclesiastical officer within the Anglican Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross. The Archdeacon was responsible for the disciplinary supervision of the clergy within the Diocese. Archdeacon Of Cloyne
The Archdeacon of Cloyne was a senior ecclesiastical officer within the Diocese of Cloyne until 1835; and then within the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross until 1986 when it merged with the Archdeaconry of Cork. As such he was responsible for the disciplinary supervision of the clergy within the Cloyne Diocese. The archdeaconry can trace its history from Colman O'Scannlain, the first known incumbent, who died in 1189 to the last discrete holder Arthur Charles Gill. Anthony Jephson (died 1755)
Anthony Jephson ( – 28 December 1755) was an Irish soldier, landowner and Whig Member of Parliament. The second son of Anthony Jephson of Mallow Castle, he was commissioned as a cornet in Lord Wharton's Regiment of Dragoons in 1710. He was placed on half-pay in 1713 and that year was elected to Parliament for the pocket borough of Mallow; he would sit for the borough until his death. In 1715 he was made captain in the Cork Militia, and was briefly a captain in Edmund Fielding's Regiment of Foot in February 1716 before becoming lieutenant-colonel of Lord Doneraile's Regiment of Dragoons later the same month. He was Deputy Governor of County Cork in 1716 and High Sheriff of the county in 1717, 1735 and 1740. In 1740 he also became colonel of his regiment. William Jephson (died 1698)
William Jephson (1665 – December 1698) was an Irish Member of Parliament. Biography The only son of Colonel John Jephson and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Francis Boyle, 1st Viscount Shannon, he inherited the family estate of Mallow Castle in 1693.
