Jens Fredrik Schroeter
Jens Fredrik Wilhelm Schroeter (21 May 1857 – 27 April 1927) was a Norwegian astronomer. He was born in Drammen as a son of sea captain Fredrik Julius Bech Schroeter and his wife Julie Schroeter. His paternal family had migrated into Norway from Langeland, Langeland, Denmark in 1787. Through his sister Jenny, he was a brother-in-law of priest Jens Jonas Jansen and an uncle of historian, genealogist and archivist Einar Jansen. He examen artium, finished his secondary education in 1872, and graduated with the cand.real. degree in 1882. His interest for astronomy stemmed from childhood, when his father had taught him the Zodiac, the planets and how to use the sextant. He worked at the observatory in Bossekop from 1882 to 1884, and as an assistant at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute from 1884 to 1888. Drammen
Drammen () is a city and municipality in Viken (county), Viken, Norway. The port and river city of Drammen is centrally located in the south-eastern and most populated part of Norway. Drammen municipality also includes smaller towns and villages such as Konnerud, Svelvik, Mjøndalen and Skoger. A sextant is a doubly reflecting navigation instrument that measures the angular distance between two visible objects. The primary use of a sextant is to measure the angle between an astronomical object and the horizon for the purposes of celestial navigation. The estimation of this angle, the altitude, is known as ''sighting'' or ''shooting'' the object, or ''taking a sight''. The angle, and the time when it was measured, can be used to calculate a position line on a nautical or aeronautical chart—for example, sighting the Sun at noon or Polaris at night (in the Northern Hemisphere) to estimate latitude (with sight reduction). Hans Geelmuyden (astronomer)
Hans Geelmuyden (10 January 1844 – 1 May 1920) was a Norwegian astronomer. He was born in Stavern. He was a relative of Ivar Christian Sommerschild Geelmuyden and Carl Victor Emanuel Geelmuyden, and the family had migrated from the Dutch Republic during the seventeenth century. Hans Geelmuyden was a grandfather of the writer of the same name. From 1890 to 1919 Hans Geelmuyden was a professor of astronomy at the University of Kristiania as well as the director of the observatory there. From 1892 to his death he edited the official Norwegian almanac.
