Jennifer Plumb is an American politician and pediatric trauma doctor from Salt Lake City, Utah. She represents Utah's 9th senate district in the Utah State Senate. Education and career Jennifer Plumb is a pediatric emergency department doctor. She has a Masters' degree in public health. She is the director of Utah Naloxone, which she founded in 2015, after her brother died of a heroin overdose. As an opioid mitigation advocate she lobbied for legislation on syringe exchanges and naloxone access. She is also a member of Utah's opioid abuse task force. Political career Jennifer Plumb ran against incumbent Senator Derek Kitchen in 2018 and lost. In a rematch of that contest, Plumb defeated Kitchen by just 61 votes in the democratic primary election for senate district 9 in June 2022. Derek Kitchen
Derek Kitchen (born August 30, 1988) is an American politician from Salt Lake City, Utah. He is a member of the Utah State Senate representing Utah's 2nd senate district, and formerly a Councilmember on the Salt Lake City Council representing Council District 4. Kitchen is also known for his appearance on Food Network's ''Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives.'' Education and career Kitchen graduated in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Utah. Kitchen and his partner, Moudi Sbeity, opened Laziz Foods in 2012 to provide Lebanese food to local grocery stores and the Farmers Market in Salt Lake City. It was in 2016 they opened Laziz Kitchen, a Lebanese restaurant downtown. A write-in candidate is a candidate whose name does not appear on the ballot but seeks election by asking voters to cast a vote for the candidate by physically writing in the person's name on the ballot. Naloxone
Naloxone, sold under the brand names Narcan (4 mg) and Kloxxado (8 mg) among others, is a medication used to reverse or reduce the effects of opioids. It is commonly used to counter decreased breathing in opioid overdose. Effects begin within two minutes when given intravenously, and within five minutes when injected into a muscle. The medicine can also be administered by spraying it into a person's nose. Naloxone commonly blocks the effects of opioids for 30 to 90 minutes. Multiple doses may be required, as the duration of action of some opioids is greater than that of naloxone. Administration to opioid-dependent individuals may cause symptoms of opioid withdrawal, including restlessness, agitation, nausea, vomiting, a fast heart rate, and sweating. A needle and syringe programme (NSP), also known as needle exchange program (NEP), is a social service that allows injecting drug users (IDUs) to obtain clean and unused hypodermic needles and associated paraphernalia at little or no cost.
