Jenner Headlands Preserve
Jenner Headlands Preserve is a nature preserve owned and managed by The Wildlands Conservancy, a nonprofit land conservancy. Covering in Sonoma County, California, the preserve offers views of the Russian River and the coastline. In 2014, Sonoma Land Trust acquired Pole Mountain, the tallest peak on the Sonoma Coast. Eventually, a trail was opened from Jenner Headlands Preserve to the peak. Jenner, also known as Jenner-by-the-Sea, is a small coastal town and census-designated place (CDP) in Sonoma County, California, U.S. with a population of about 122 per the 2020 census. It is located on the Pacific coast near the mouth of the Russian River. State Route 1 runs through the town and State Route 116 runs nearby, along the Russian River. Immediately south of Jenner is Goat Rock Beach, a unit within the Sonoma Coast State Beach. History Historically, Jenner was part of the Rancho Muniz. The town’s namesake, Dr. Elijah K. Jenner, was a dentist and inventor from Vermont. When his son Charles K. was born in 1846, the family was living in Wisconsin. Elijah came west in 1850 and sought his fortune in the California goldfields. Working as a miner, he designed a pump that could raise water high. The Wildlands Conservancy
The Wildlands Conservancy (TWC) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve land for public recreation. It operates 23 preserves in California and Oregon. The preserve system comprises 210,686 acres including mountains, valleys, deserts, rivers and oceanfront lands. TWC buys land, restores land, builds public visitor facilities and provides outdoor education programs for children. All usage (hiking, camping, education programs) is free of charge. There are over 1 million visitors annually. Preserve System Summary History The California Desert Protection Act of 1994 established two national parks, one national preserve and 69 wilderness areas. Estero Americano Coast Preserve is a nature preserve owned and managed by The Wildlands Conservancy, a nonprofit land conservancy. Located along the Pacific Ocean and the Estero Americano Estuary in Sonoma County, California, the preserve offers scenic views of the estuary's mouth and surrounding hills. Sonoma Coast State Park
Sonoma Coast State Park is a State of California property in Sonoma County consisting of public access use on lands adjoining the Pacific Ocean. This extent of beach runs from a coastal point about north of Jenner and continues for approximately to the south to terminate at Bodega Head. The property lies along State Route 1 and consists of a number of named beaches including Arched Rock Beach, Gleason Beach and Goat Rock Beach. The ecosystem consists of alternating sandy beaches and rocky shoreline, with a marine terrace extending above the entire extent with an upland California coastal prairie habitat. Geology This strip of coastal property is subject to continuing marine erosion as well as windborne erosion, thus creating a situation where an average of one to three feet (30 to 90 cm) per year of land mass is lost.
