Jeneberang River
The Jeneberang ( id, Sungai Jeneberang) (Historical Name : ''Garassi River'') is a river of approximately 75 km in length in the south-western half of the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The catchment has an area of 760 square kilometers. Hydrology The river rises near the 2833 meter high mountain Mount Bawakaraeng and runs through the districts of Gowa and Takalar up to the port city of Makassar, flowing into the Makassar Strait. Its final stretch physically separates the ''kelurahan'' of Barombong to the south from the rest of the city to the north. The river has flooded the city regularly, notably in 1976. Approximately 40 km downstream is located is the 73 metre high Bili-Bili Dam, completed in 1999 with an internal volume of 380 million cubic meters. On 26 March 2004 a landslide occurred in the upper reaches of the Jeneberang, killing 32 people. On 22 January 2019, the river overflowed due to heavy rain, causing a flood that killed dozens. South Sulawesi
South Sulawesi ( id, Sulawesi Selatan) is a province in the southern peninsula of Sulawesi. The Selayar Islands archipelago to the south of Sulawesi is also part of the province. The capital is Makassar. Makassar Strait
Makassar Strait is a strait between the islands of Borneo and Sulawesi in Indonesia. To the north it joins the Celebes Sea, while to the south it meets the Java Sea. To the northeast, it forms the Sangkulirang Bay south of the Mangkalihat Peninsula. The strait is an important regional shipping route in Southeast Asia. The Mahakam River and Karangan River of Borneo empty into the strait. Ports along the strait include Balikpapan and Bontang in Borneo, and Makassar, Palu, and Parepare in Sulawesi. Bili-Bili Dam
The Bili-Bili Dam is located in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, on the Jeneberang River, about 30 km from the city of Makassar. It serves several purposes to include flood control, irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. The dam was constructed between 1991 and 1998. Background In 1981, Bili-Bili Dam was added to the Jeneberang River Comprehensive Development Project. Construction began in 1991 and the dam was completed in 1998. The weirs downstream of the dam and their accompanying irrigation canals were completed in December 2005. The dam's power station was commissioned in 2005 as well.
