Thomas Jenckes
Thomas Allen Jenckes I (November 2, 1818 – November 4, 1875) was a United States representative from Rhode Island. Jenckes was best known for introducing a bill that created the United States Department of Justice. President Ulysses S. Grant then signed the bill into law on June 22, 1870. Jenckes was also an avid supporter of civil service reform. Biography Thomas Jenckes was born in Cumberland, Rhode Island on November 2, 1818. He graduated from Brown University in 1838. Jenckes was admitted to the Rhode Island state bar in 1840. He was clerk in the Rhode Island state legislature from 1840 until 1844. From 1854 until 1857 he was a member of the State house of representatives. He was elected as Republican to the United States Congress in 1863 and served until 1871 when he lost a bid for reelection. Jenckes House (Old Louisquisset Pike, Lincoln, Rhode Island)
The Jenckes House is a historic house at 1730 Old Louisquisset Pike in Lincoln, Rhode Island, United States. It is a -story timber-frame structure, five bays wide, with a large central chimney. The main entrance is flanked by pilasters and topped by a transom window and heavy molded cap. Additions extend the house to the south and northwest. The main block is estimated to have been built around 1760, by a member of the locally prominent Jenckes family. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Jenckes Mansion
The Jenckes Mansion is an historic house in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. This three-story brick double house was built in 1828 by the Jenckes family, owners of the mills around which this area of Woonsocket, known as Jenckesville, grew. The building exhibits late Federal styling, and is distinctive as a rare example of a period private residence with ballroom. This space, located on the building's attic space, was divided into residential spaces c. 1900, when the building was converted into a tenement house.
