''Jemmy Green in Australia'' is an Australian stage play allegedly written by writer James Tucker around 1845. It was reportedly written at Port Macquarie along with Tucker's '' Ralph Rashleigh''. The play was published by Angus and Robertson in 1955. 1952 Radio adaptation The play was adapted for a one-hour drama on ABC radio on 8 December 1952. This followed an adaptation the ABC had done for another Tucker stage play, '' Ralph Rashleigh and the Bushrangers''. ''ABC Weekly'' said it "depicts the roguery of the sharper and the bewilderment of the immigrant. His is a supple wit, sharpened by a sardonic humour similar to that which has come to be recognised as characteristically Australian." James Tucker (convict)
James Rosenberg Tucker (1808–1888) was an Australian convict and author from Bristol, England. Under the pseudonym Giacomo di Rosenberg, Tucker wrote his autobiographical ''Ralph Rashleigh; or, The Life of an Exile'' in 1844. It was published in a heavily edited form in 1929, and his original manuscript was published in 1952. Tucker was convicted at the Chelmsford Spring Assizes on 3 March 1826 of blackmailing his cousin, James Stanyford Tucker. He was tried before Sir William Alexander, C.B., "On an indictment for sending a threatening letter...accus ngof an infamous crime" and sentenced to transportation for life. He was 18 years old at the time. The next year he was put aboard the convict ship ''Midas'', which sailed for Sydney Cove. He arrived in Sydney in 1827 and worked at Emu Plains, New South Wales. ''Ralph Rashleigh and the Bushrangers'' is a 1953 Australian radio play by Edmund Barclay based on an 1840s novel by James Tucker. The novel had been republished in 1952, edited by Colin Roderick who claimed that he discovered James Tucker was the author. This event ignited a great deal of public interest in the novel which would be adapted for radio three times over a two-year period: twice by the ABC, and once by commercial radio. There was another ABC radio adaptation of a Tucker work, ''Jemmy Green in Australia''. Premise The October 1953 adaptation did not cover all the novel by focused on Ralph Rashleigh's adventures with bushranger Foxley.
