Jeju National Museum
Jeju National Museum is a national museum located in Jeju, South Korea. It opened on June 15, 2001. Construction of the museum began in December 1992 and ended on December 28 2000. The museum primarily focuses on the archaeology and history of Jeju, South Korea. The museum also specializes in Tamna and the maritime culture of Jeju. Construction 38.6 billion south korean won was invested to construct the building for the museum. Jeju City
Jeju City ( ko, 제주시, Jeju-si; ) is the capital of the Jeju Province in South Korea and the largest city on Jeju Island. The city is served by Jeju International Airport ( IATA code CJU). Located on an island off the Korean Peninsula, Jeju has mild, warm weather during much of the year. The city is a well-known resort, with prestigious hotels and public casino facilities. Tamna
Tamna, or Tamna-guk, was a state based on Jeju Island from ancient times until it was absorbed by the Korean Joseon dynasty in 1404, following a long period of being a tributary state or autonomous administrative region of various Korean kingdoms. The Go (Jeju) clan is the family name of the Grand Duke (Seongju, 성주, 星主), that ruled West Tamna over 400 years. The Moon (Nampyeong) clan is the family name of the Grand Prince (Wangja, 왕자, 王子), that ruled East Tamna for 400 years. The Kingdom of Tamna is also sometimes known as Tangna (탕나), Seomna (섬나), and Tammora. All of these names mean "island country". Legends of founding There is no discovered historical record of the founding or early history of Tamna. Dol Hareubang
''Dol hareubangs'', also called ''tol harubangs'', ''hareubangs'', or ''harubangs'', are large rock statues found on Jeju Island off the southern tip of South Korea. They are considered to be gods offering both protection and fertility and were placed outside of gates for protection against demons travelling between realities. Description Dol hareubangs are carved from porous basalt (volcanic rock) and can be up to three metres high. The statues' faces feature grinning expressions, bulging eyes without pupils, a long, broad nose, and slight smile, and their hands rest on their bellies, one slightly above the other. In sets of two, one has a higher left hand, and the other a higher right hand. The hat is commonly described as phallic or mushroom-like.
