Jefferson Township, Tipton County, Indiana
Jefferson Township is one of six townships in Tipton County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,422 and it contained 616 housing units. History Squatters were the first white settlers in the area. Barnett Stepp was the first known white settler in Jefferson Township. He moved with his family, from Kentucky, to the southern part of the future township in 1835. Stepp maintained a small home and farm until his death in 1852. A son-in-law of Stepp, named Horton, came to the township in 1836, settling on 160 acres just east of Stepp's land. A civil township is a widely used unit of local government in the United States that is subordinate to a county, most often in the northern and midwestern parts of the country. Prairie Township, Tipton County, Indiana
Prairie Township is one of six townships in Tipton County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,140 and it contained 482 housing units. History Prior to becoming a township, a portion of the land was Miami Indian reservation land. White squatters did settle illegally in the area. The first known named white settler in the area was Alexander Suite. He came to Indiana in 1842 originally Tennessee. Suite built the first log cabin in the township. He eventually relocated to Russiaville, Indiana, eventually. Goldsmith, Indiana
Goldsmith is an unincorporated community of Jefferson Township in Tipton County, Indiana, United States, about north of Indianapolis. It is part of the Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Originally called Green Station, Goldsmith was surveyed in 1876. The original landowners were John Wolford, J.A. Teter, McDonald Teter, and Hiram Fulkerson. The town's name was changed to Goldsmith after the founders discovered another town in Indiana named Green Station. It was named after a contractor who helped build the LaFayette, Muncie and Bloomington Railroad. The first home was built in the village, on the west side, by Solomon Wolford. There was also a blacksmith and a shop. A Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in Goldsmith in 1881. A church was built for the congregation, costing $1,000 to build. Kempton, Indiana
Kempton is a town in Jefferson Township, Tipton County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 335 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Kempton was founded in 1875, upon the completion of the Lake Erie and Western Railroad, in the same year. The land was originally owned by David Kemp, the namesake of the town. The first house in Kempton was built by Henry Hays. Hays also operated a grocery out of the building. That year, there was also a post office, an additional store, a blacksmith, and a mill. A Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1902. As of 1914, the town had a population of about 700 people and had a bank, newspaper, and three churches. Tilemaking was the most lucrative industry, with the Kempton Tile Factory being located in the town. A canning factory and milling company were also located in Kempton. The Protestant Methodists were a small Methodist church based in Leeds. They left the Methodist conference in 1827 in protest at the installation of an organ in Brunswick Chapel in Leeds. This grew into a wider dispute around the style of government of the conference, though it continued to be known as the Leeds Organ Dispute. The Protestant Methodists constituted themselves as a separate body in 1828. Normanda, Indiana
Normanda is an unincorporated community in Jefferson Township, Tipton County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. History Normanda was platted in 1849. The owners of the land were M.P. Evans, Edward Jackson, and Matthew Jones. Evans built the first frame house in the village. In 1850, J.C. Vandevender built the first store room, where he sold a variety of items. That same year, the Presbyterian Church of Tipton was founded in Normanda. It eventually was dissolved, only to be re-organized in Tipton.
