Jefferson Patterson
Jefferson Patterson (14 May 1891–12 November 1977) was an American diplomat who served as United States Ambassador to Uruguay under Dwight D. Eisenhower, from 1956 to 1958. He married Mary Marvin Breckinridge Patterson in 1940. He also had assignments in Berlin, Belgium, Egypt, Greece, and the UN Special Committee on the Balkans. He also wrote a book, ''Diplomatic Duty and Diversion''. Patterson additionally worked at the U.S. Embassy in Paris during World War II, and was in charge of French prisoners of war before the transfer of protecting power from the United States to Vichy France. Vichy France (french: Régime de Vichy; 10 July 1940 – 9 August 1944), officially the French State ('), was the fascist French state headed by Marshal Philippe Pétain during World War II. Officially independent, but with half of its territory occupied under harsh terms of the armistice, it adopted a policy of collaboration with Nazi Germany, which occupied the northern and western portions before occupying the remainder of Metropolitan France in November 1942. Dempster McIntosh
Dempster McIntosh (17 January 1896 – 6 May 1984) was an American business executive and diplomat, serving as the United States Ambassador to Uruguay, Venezuela, and Colombia. He was also the President of Philco from 1943 to 1953 and Manager of the Development Loan Fund of the International Cooperation Administration. Early life Dempster McIntosh was born in Newport, Rhode Island, on 17 January 1896. At age seven, his family moved to Cotuit, Massachusetts, a small fishing village on Cape Cod, where his father was a gardener on the Rothwell estate. In those preadolescent years, he worked as a laborer in the summertime and was generally known as "a jovial figure." In 1908, the McIntoshes moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where, at the age of 15, he stopped attending school and began working. Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum
Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum (JPPM) is a 560-acre state park and museum located along the Patuxent River in St. Leonard, Calvert County, Maryland. The property of JPPM was given to the state of Maryland by Mary Marvin Patterson in 1983 in honor of her husband Jefferson Patterson, a U.S. diplomat. Many of its buildings were designed by Gertrude Sawyer starting in the 1930s, and some landscaping was done by Rose Greely and Cary Millholland Parker. The property has more than 70 identified archaeological sites, with current excavation and research being done. The land features 9,000 years of documented human occupation. The park has hiking and biking trails, a canoe and kayak launch, a visitor's center with exhibits and a gift shop, an exhibit barn, a pavilion for event rental, a recreated Woodland Indian village, and a historic house. French Prisoners Of War In World War II
During World War II, the French prisoners of war were primarily soldiers from France and its colonial empire captured by Nazi Germany. Although no precise estimates exist, the number of French soldiers captured during the Battle of France between May and June 1940 is generally recognised around 1.8 million, equivalent to around 10 percent of the total adult male population of France at the time. After a brief period of captivity in France, most of the prisoners were deported to Germany. In Germany, prisoners were incarcerated in '' Stalag'' or ''Oflag'' prison camps, according to rank, but the vast majority were soon transferred to work details (''Kommandos'') working in German agriculture or industry.
