Jean Taffin
Jean Taffin (1529–1602), was a Dutch Walloon minister and theologian. Biography He was born in Tournai to a noble family and travelled to Italy where he studied in Padua before returning north. From 1554 to 1557 he was librarian to Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle in Atrecht ( Arras). He left Granvelle to study in Geneva under Calvin and Beza and in 1558 he became a reformer in Antwerp. He became a French-speaking pastor there in 1566. He had to flee the contra-reformers and travelled to Aken and on to Worms, and after receiving his doctorate in Geneva became a pastor in Metz and in 1562 he got his own church there. In 1564 he was invited to a secret conference by William the Silent to talk about a union of Protestant churches with Carolus Niellius, François Baudouin and Guy de Bres. Afterwards, he preached at the St. Walburgkerk in Antwerp and in 1566 oversaw the conversion (anabaptism) of Guy de Bres. Emden
Emden () is an independent city and seaport in Lower Saxony in the northwest of Germany, on the river Ems. It is the main city of the region of East Frisia and, in 2011, had a total population of 51,528. GAMEO
The Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online (GAMEO) is an online encyclopedia of topics relating to Mennonites and Anabaptism. The mission of the project is to provide free, reliable, English-language information on Anabaptist-related topics. GAMEO was started in 1996 as the Canadian Mennonite Encyclopedia Online by the Mennonite Historical Society of Canada. In 2005 the project was renamed to its current title and the scope expanded with the additional partnership of the Mennonite Brethren Historical Commission and the Mennonite Church USA Archives. The collaboration has since further expanded, with the addition of the Mennonite Central Committee in 2006, the Mennonite World Conference in January 2007, and the Institute for the Study of Global Anabaptism in 2011. NNBW
The ''Nieuw Nederlandsch Biografisch Woordenboek'' (''NNBW'') is a biographical reference work in the Dutch language. It has been succeeded by the ''Biografisch Woordenboek van Nederland''. It was published in ten parts between 1911 and 1937 by Sijthoff, Leiden, and the editors were and P. J. Blok. The lexicon contains more than 22,000 short biographies on important or at least notable Dutch people. No persons born after 1910 were included. The ''NNBW'' was compiled by several hundred historians and other experts. Since then it has been considered one of the most important reference works for Dutch history. It has been digitalised through a collaboration between the Digital Library for Dutch Literature (dbnl) and the Institution for Dutch History (ING), and both organisations have made the ''NNBW'' fully available to everyone on their respective sites. Walloon Church, Amsterdam
The Walloon Church (Dutch: ''Waalse Kerk''; French: ''Église Wallonne'') is a Protestant church building in Amsterdam, along the southern stretch of the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal. The building dates to the late 15th century and has been in use as a Walloon church since 1586. The church was also known as the ''Franse Kerk'' ("French Church"), ''Walenkerk'' ("Walloons' Church"), ''Oude Walenkerk'' ("Old Walloons' Church"), or ''Oude Waalse Kerk'' ("Old Walloon Church"). The painter Bartholomeus van der Helst (1613-1670) and the scientist Jan Swammerdam (1637-1680) are interred in the church. Elizabeth Timothy (1702-1757), the first female American newspaper editor and publisher, was most likely christened there. The painter Vincent van Gogh visited the church regularly in the 1870s to attend sermons delivered by his uncle Johannes Paulus Stricker. Caspar Coolhaes
Caspar Coolhaes, or Koolhaas, (1536–1615) was a Reformed minister in the Netherlands and a libertine opponent of Calvinistic confessionalism. Caspar Coolhaes was born in Cologne in 1536. He studied at Düsseldorf. In 1566 he joined the Reformation. He pastored in the regions of Zweibruck and Nassau. In 1574 he accepted a professorship at the new University of Leiden. He became a noted figure in the 16th century in the Netherlands in the conflict between how the church and state should interact. An influx of strict Calvinists into Leiden lobbied for the church's freedom to deal harshly with heretics and impose punishments, while Protestants Coolhaes, Pieter Hackius, and others argued along with Thomas Erastus that it was right for the civil magistrates to maintain control over punishment and order, even in church matters.
