Jean De Dinteville
Jean de Dinteville (1504–1555) was a French diplomat. He is the left-hand figure in Hans Holbein the Younger, Holbein's 1533 painting ''The Ambassadors (Holbein), The Ambassadors'', painted whilst he was French ambassador to London, and which he presumably commissioned. Dinteville's motto was ''Memento mori'', meaning "Remember thou shalt die." Hans Holbein The Younger
Hans Holbein the Younger ( , ; german: Hans Holbein der Jüngere; – between 7 October and 29 November 1543) was a Germans, German-Swiss people, Swiss painter and printmaker who worked in a Northern Renaissance style, and is considered one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century. He also produced religious art, satire, and Protestant Reformation, Reformation propaganda, and he made a significant contribution to the history of book design. He is called "the Younger" to distinguish him from his father Hans Holbein the Elder, an accomplished painter of the International Gothic, Late Gothic school. Holbein was born in Augsburg but worked mainly in Basel as a young artist. The Ambassadors (Holbein)
''The Ambassadors'' is a 1533 painting by Hans Holbein the Younger. Also known as '' Jean de Dinteville and Georges de Selve'', after the two people it portrays, it was created in the Tudor period, in the same year Elizabeth I was born. Franny Moyle speculates that Elizabeth's mother, Anne Boleyn, then Queen of England, might have commissioned the painting as a gift for Jean de Dinteville, the ambassador portrayed on the left in the painting. As well as being a double portrait, the painting contains a still life of several meticulously rendered objects, the meaning of which is the cause of much debate. François de Dinteville (1477–1530) was a French Catholic bishop. After a legal training in Pavia as doctor of both laws, he became bishop of Sisteron in 1506. He was bishop of Auxerre from 1513 to his death. The Hours of François de Dinteville (1525) were acquired by the British Museum in 1852 and are now in the British Library. His successor was another François de Dinteville, , his nephew, who had been Bishop of Riez The former French Catholic diocese of Riez existed at least from fifth century Gaul to the French Revolution.
