Jean Chavannes Jeune
Jean Chavannes Jeune is a Haitian Christian leader, pastor and evangelist, who was a candidate for president in the 2006 Haitian general election for the Christian National Union for the Reconstruction of Haiti. He finished in fourth position. He was a Vice President of Haiti in 1988–89. Early life and education Born in Haiti on December 29, 1953, Chavannes Jeune grew up in an evangelistic household. His father Pastor Beauvil Jeune was a pioneer of the Evangelical Baptist Mission of South Haiti, Mission Evangelique Baptiste du Sud d'Haiti (MEBSH). During a Vacation Bible School at age seven, Chavannes made his own personal commitment to Christ, followed by baptism at fourteen. 2006 Haitian General Election
General elections were held in Haiti on 7 February 2006 to elect the replacements for the interim government of Gérard Latortue, which had been put in place after the 2004 Haiti rebellion. The elections were delayed four times, having originally been scheduled for October and November 2005. The Christian National Union for the Reconstruction of Haiti (''Union Nationale Chrétienne pour la Reconstruction d'Haïti'') is a political party in Haiti. The Evangelical Baptist Mission of South Haiti (french: Mission Evangélique Baptiste du Sud d'Haïti) is a Baptist Christian denomination in Haiti, headquartered in Les Cayes. MEBSH is a member of the Protestant Federation of Haiti, the Evangelical Council of Haitian Churches and the Baptist World Alliance. History Evangelical Baptist Mission of South Haiti (MEBSH) began with the evangelistic efforts of repatriated Haitians from Cuba in the 1920s. The organization was officially formed in 1936 in Les Cayes when the movement's leaders invited the non-denominational agency World Team (then West Indies Mission) to open a Bible school. Vacation Bible School (VBS) is a religious term usually used to represent a week long event in the summer. History The origins of Vacation Bible School can be traced back to Hopedale, Illinois in 1894. Sunday school teacher D. T. Miles, who also was a public school teacher, felt she was limited by time constraints in teaching the Bible to children. So, she started a daily Bible school to teach children during the summer. The first Bible school enrolled forty students and lasted four weeks. A local school was used for classes, while an adjoining park was used for recess. In 1898, Virginia Sinclair Hawes (often identified as "Mrs. Walker Aylett Hawes"), director of the children's department at Epiphany Baptist Church in New York City, started an "Everyday Bible School" for neighborhood children during the summer at a rented beer parlor in New York's East Side.
