Jean Bouffard
Jean Bouffard (1800 – December 1, 1843) was a notary and political figure in Lower Canada. He represented Dorchester in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada from 1832 to 1838. He was born at Saint-Laurent on ÃŽle d'Orléans, the son of Jean Bouffard and Marie Noël. Bouffard apprenticed as a notary at Saint-Henri-de-Lauzon and set up practice there after qualifying to practice in 1830. In 1831, he married Catherine Pepin dit Lachance. He was named school inspector for Dorchester County in 1832 and commissioner for the Court of Minor Causes in 1837. Bouffard was first elected to the provincial assembly in an 1832 by-election held after the death of Louis Lagueux. Lower Canada
The Province of Lower Canada (french: province du Bas-Canada) was a British colony on the lower Saint Lawrence River and the shores of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (1791–1841). It covered the southern portion of the current Province of Quebec and the Labrador region of the current Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (until the Labrador region was transferred to Newfoundland in 1809). Lower Canada consisted of part of the former colony of Canada of New France, conquered by Great Britain in the Seven Years' War ending in 1763 (also called the French and Indian War in the United States). Other parts of New France conquered by Britain became the Colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Legislative Assembly Of Lower Canada
The Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada was the lower house of the bicameral structure of provincial government in Lower Canada until 1838. The legislative assembly was created by the Constitutional Act of 1791. The lower house consisted of elected legislative councilors who created bills to be passed up to the Legislative Council of Lower Canada, whose members were appointed by the governor general. Following the Lower Canada Rebellion, the lower house was dissolved on March 27, 1838, and Lower Canada was administered by an appointed Special Council. With the Act of Union in 1840, a new lower chamber, the Legislative Assembly of Canada, was created for both Upper and Lower Canada which existed until 1867, when the Legislative Assembly of Quebec was created. Saint-Laurent-de-l'Île-d'Orléans
Saint-Laurent-de-l'Île-d'Orléans () is a municipality in the Capitale-Nationale region of Quebec, Canada, part of the L'Île-d'Orléans Regional County Municipality. It is situated on the south side of Orléans Island. Prior to June 6, 1998 it was known simply as Saint-Laurent. Saint-Laurent has been twinned with Tourouvre in France since 1982. Île D'Orléans
Île d'Orléans (; en, Island of Orleans) is an island located in the Saint Lawrence River about east of downtown Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. It was one of the first parts of the province to be colonized by the French, and a large percentage of French Canadians can trace ancestry to early residents of the island. The island has been described as the "microcosm of traditional Quebec and as the birthplace of francophones in North America." It has about 7,000 inhabitants, spread over 6 villages. The island is accessible from the mainland via the Île d'Orléans Bridge from Beauport. Louis Lagueux
Louis Lagueux (November 20, 1793 РJune 15, 1832) was a lawyer and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born in the town of Quebec in 1793, the son of merchant Louis Lagueux and Louise B̩gin, whose father Charles B̩gin served in the legislative assembly. Lagueux studied at the Petit S̩minaire de Qu̩bec, articled in law with Joseph-R̩mi Valli̬res de Saint-R̩al and qualified to practice in 1817. That same year, he entered the importing business with a partner; after that business failed the following year, he returned to the practice of law. Ninety-Two Resolutions
The Ninety-Two Resolutions were drafted by Louis-Joseph Papineau and other members of the ''Parti patriote'' of Lower Canada in 1834. The resolutions were a long series of demands for political reforms in the British-governed colony. Papineau had been elected speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada in 1815. His party constantly opposed the unelected colonial government, and in 1828 he helped draft an early form of the resolutions, essentially a list of grievances against the colonial administration. To ensure that the views of the Legislative Assembly be understood by the British House of Commons, the ''Parti patriote'' had sent its own delegation to London in order to submit a memoir and a petition signed by 78,000 people. On February 28, 1834, Papineau presented the Ninety-Two Resolutions to the Legislative Assembly, which were approved and sent to London.
