Jean-René Fournier
Jean-René Fournier (; born 18 December 1957) is a Swiss politician. Notably, he was a member of the Council of States from 2007 to 2019, serving as the President of the Council from 2018 to 2019. Previously, he was a member of the Grand Council of Valais from 1985 to 1997 and a Councillor of State of Valais from 1997 to 2009. He was president of the cantonal executive from 2000 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2005. Fournier was elected as the President of the Council of States for the 2018–2019 term with 44 out of 45 votes. He was the fourth Valais representative to be elected to the post. Council Of States (Switzerland)
The Council of States (german: Ständerat, french: Conseil des États, it, Consiglio degli Stati, rm, Cussegl dals Stadis) is the upper house of the Federal Assembly of Switzerland, with the National Council being the lower house. It comprises 46 members. Twenty of the country's cantons are represented by two Councillors each. Six cantons, traditionally called "half cantons", are represented by one Councillor each for historical reasons. These are Obwalden, Nidwalden, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden. The Councillors serve for four years, and are not bound in their vote to instructions from the cantonal authorities. Karin Keller-Sutter
Karin Keller-Sutter (born 22 December 1963) is a Swiss politician who has served as a Member of the Swiss Federal Council since 2019. A member of FDP.The Liberals, she is the head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police. Keller-Sutter previously served as President of the Council of States for the 2017–2018 term. 2019 Swiss Federal Election
Federal elections were held in Switzerland on 20 October 2019 to elect all members of both houses of the Federal Assembly. This was followed by the 2019 election to the Swiss Federal Council, the federal executive, by the United Federal Assembly. In the 20 October elections, the two green parties, the Green Party of Switzerland and the Green Liberal Party of Switzerland, made major electoral gains, taking 13.2% and 7.8% of the vote respectively. As in the previous election, the Swiss People's Party received the most votes, but its share of votes went down to 25.6% from 29.4%.
