Medieval Studies
Medieval studies is the academic interdisciplinary study of the Middle Ages. Institutional development The term 'medieval studies' began to be adopted by academics in the opening decades of the twentieth century, initially in the titles of books like G. G. Coulton's ''Ten Medieval Studies'' (1906), to emphasize a greater interdisciplinary approach to a historical subject. In American and European universities the term provided a coherent identity to centres composed of academics from a variety of disciplines including archaeology, art history, architecture, history, literature and linguistics. The Institute of Mediaeval Studies at St. Michael's College of the University of Toronto became the first centre of this type in 1929; it is now the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (PIMS) and is part of the University of Toronto. The ''Actes de la recherche en sciences sociales'' is a quarterly French academic journal of social science established in 1975 by Pierre Bourdieu at the Maison des sciences de l'homme (MSH). It is published by Éditions du Seuil and produced in collaboration with the Centre de sociologie européenne (a Centre national de la recherche scientifique laboratory based at the University of Paris 1, University of Paris-1 and the École des hautes études en sciences sociales), as well as the Collège de France, the Fondation Maison des sciences de l'homme, and the Centre national du livre. Bourdieu was the editor-in-chief until his death in 2002. François Denord later served in the post; the current editor-in-chief is Sylvie Tissot. Michel Rouche
Michel Rouche (30 May 1934 – 5 December 2021) was a French historian and academic. He specialized in the history of Gaul during the Roman Empire and in the Middle Ages. Biography Rouche earned an agrégation in history in 1959 and subsequently taught at the in Compiègne. He earned a doctorate in history from Paris-Sorbonne University in 1976 and became a professor at Charles de Gaulle University – Lille III, the Institut Catholique de Paris, and Paris-Sorbonne University. Rouche was heavily focused on the end of ancient history and the establishment of barbaric kingdoms in the Early Middle Ages, notably the Visigothic Kingdom. He met Pope John Paul II in 1996 in Reims during a celebration in commemoration of the baptism of Clovis I. He also helped to draft the film ''Clovis et son temps'', directed by Jacques Barsac.
