Jean-Laurent Kopp
Jean-Laurent Kopp (8 November 1812 – 23 September 1872) was a French actor and singer. Career Born in Paris, an orphan raised at the Quinze-Vingts National Ophthalmology Hospital, Kopp made his debut at the Théâtre de Belleville before moving, in the role of a comic actor, to the Théâtre Beaumarchais. After a brief stint at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in 1841, he joined the Théâtre des Variétés where he spent most of his career (except for a long tour of the provinces from 1855 to 1860). He appeared in numerous plays, including many by Labiche including '' The Italian Straw Hat'' and others but it was in the opéras-bouffes by Jacques Offenbach that he met his greatest successes: he was in turn Menelaus in ''La belle Hélène'' (1864), King Bobêche in '' Barbe-bleue'' (1866), Baron Puck in ''La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein'' (1867), Baptiste in ''Le pont des soupirs'' (1868) and Pietro in ''Les Brigands'' (1869). ''Le pont des soupirs '' ("The Bridge of Sighs") is an opéra bouffe (or operetta) set in Venice, by Jacques Offenbach, first performed in Paris in 1861. The French libretto was written by Hector Crémieux and Ludovic Halévy. Plays, including melodramas, set in Venice were quite common in Paris in the early 19th century; the libretto, by the successful team from ''Orphée aux enfers'', also nods towards the operas ''La reine de Chypre'' (1841) and '' Haydée'' (1847). Gänzl describes the piece as being in Offenbach's "best bouffe manner", noting a "long list of sparkling and funny musical pieces": the multiple serenade beneath Catarina's balcony, the tale of the loss of the Venetian fleet, the parody of an operatic mad scene for Catarina, and a farcical "quatuor des poignards". Charles Lecocq
Alexandre Charles Lecocq (3 June 183224 October 1918) was a French composer, known for his opérettes and opéra comique, opéras comiques. He became the most prominent successor to Jacques Offenbach in this sphere, and enjoyed considerable success in the 1870s and early 1880s, before the changing musical fashions of the late 19th century made his style of composition less popular. His few serious works include the opera ''Plutus (opera), Plutus'' (1886), which was not a success, and the ballet ''Le Cygne (ballet), Le cygne'' (1899). His only piece to survive in the regular modern operatic repertory is his 1872 opéra comique ''La fille de Madame Angot'' (Mme Angot's Daughter). Others of his more than forty stage works receive occasional revivals. Les Cent Vierges
''Les cent vierges'' (The Hundred Maidens) is an opérette in three acts, with music by Charles Lecocq and a libretto by Clairville (Louis-François Nicolaïe), Clairville, Henri Chivot and Alfred Duru. It was first produced at the Théâtre des Fantaisies-Parisiennes, Brussels, on 16 March 1872. The plot concerns the British government's efforts to ship brides out to a distant colony for the all-male colonists. Two French women are accidentally on board the ship taking the brides out, and are pursued to the island by their husbands. The four French intruders are threatened by the colonial governor, but after plotting and farcical goings-on, all ends satisfactorily. The work was rewritten many years after the deaths of its authors and composer, and staged in a version by Albert Willemetz and André Mouëzy-Éon in Paris in 1942 and 1946. Les Brigands
''Les brigands'' (''The Bandits'') is an opéra bouffe, or operetta, by Jacques Offenbach to a French libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. Meilhac and Halévy's libretto lampoons both serious drama (Schiller's play ''The Robbers'') and opéra comique (''Fra Diavolo'' and ''Les diamants de la couronne'' by Auber). The plot is cheerfully amoral in its presentation of theft as a basic principle of society rather than as an aberration. As Falsacappa, the brigand chieftain, notes: "Everybody steals according to their position in society."
