Jean-André Cuoq
Jean-André Cuoq (1821–1898) was a Roman Catholic priest and a philologist in the Algonquin and Mohawk languages. Early life Jean-André Cuoq was born on June 6, 1821, to Jean-Pierre Cuoq and Rosalie Desholme, in Le Puy-en-Velay, France. He entered the ''Company of Saint-Sulpice'' in Paris in 1844. He was ordained as a priest in the Order of Saint-Sulpice in December 1845. He was sent to Quebec, Canada, on November 29, 1846. He was then sent to the mission of the Lac des Deux-Montagnes (Oka, Quebec) in 1847 as a missionary to the Nipissings. Later life Cuoq remained in Oka for many years as a companion of Fr. Nicolas Dufresne (1789–1863), who was the director of that mission and missionary to the Mohawks. Cuoq at first studied Nipissing, but after Fr. Dufresne was withdrawn from the mission in 1857 and sent to a seminary in Montreal, Cuoq applied himself in studying the Mohawk language. Jean-André Deluc or de Luc (8 February 1727 – 7 November 1817) was a Swiss geologist, natural philosopher and meteorologist. He also devised measuring instruments. Biography Jean-André Deluc was born in Geneva. His family had come to the Republic of Geneva from Lucca, Italy, in the 15th century. His mother was Françoise Huaut. His father, Jacques-François Deluc, had written in refutation of Bernard Mandeville and other rationalistic writers, but he was also a decided supporter of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. As a student of Georges-Louis Le Sage, Jean-André Deluc received a basic education in mathematics and in natural philosophy. He engaged early in business, which occupied a large part of his first adult years, with the exception of scientific investigation in the Alps. Jean-André Mongez (21 November 1750 – May 1788) was a French priest and mineralogist. He is presumed to have died at Vanikoro, on the La Pérouse expedition. Life Mongez was born in Lyon. He joined the canons regulars of Sainte-Geneviève Abbey in Paris and devoted himself to scientific studies, giving his findings to several scholarly societies. As editor of the ''Journal de Physique'', he belonged to the Société d’histoire naturelle at the académies de Rouen, Dijon and Lyon. Many had called for him to enter the Académie des sciences when he left in 1785 as doctor and almoner to the Pérouse expedition. He had been presented for this role by his abbot at Sainte-Geneviève Abbey, Pingré, and his talents also extended to ornithology, entomology, water chemistry, and mineral salts. Jean-André Rixens (30 November 1846 – 21 February 1925) was a French painter, known for his classical scenes and portraits. Biography He was born in Saint-Gaudens. His father was a master shoemaker. After completing his basic education, he was enrolled in 1860 at the . He paid for his tuition there and supported himself by painting commercial signs and making copies of artworks. In 1866, his painting ''The Death of Alcibiades'' earned him a scholarship from the City of Toulouse. This enabled him to enroll at the École des beaux-arts de Paris, where he studied with the military history painter Adolphe Yvon.
