Sinhalese people ( si, සිංහල ජනතාව, Sinhala Janathāva) are an Indo-Aryan ethnolinguistic group native to the island of Sri Lanka. They were historically known as Hela people ( si, හෙළ). They constitute about 75% of the Sri Lankan population and number more than 16.2 million. The Sinhalese identity is based on language, cultural heritage and nationality. Marcelline Jayakody
Fr. Marcelline Jayakody ( Sinhala: මර්සලින් ජයකොඩි පියතුමා) (3 June 1902 ─ January 15, 1998) was a Sri Lankan Catholic priest, musician, lyricist, author, journalist and an exponent of indigenous culture. He is attributed with the epithet 'පන්සලේ පියතුමා' (Pansale Piyathuma - Priest in the Temple). Ven. Dr. Ittapane Dhammalankara Thera authored a book on Jayakody's life, ''මල් පැලේ උපන් පන්සලේ පියතුමා'', (''Malpale Upan Pansale Piyathuma''), which is recorded as the first book in the world by a Buddhist prelate on a Catholic priest. Jayakody Arachchige Don Edward Timothy Jayakody ( Sinhala:එඩ්වඩ් ජයකොඩි: born 6 April 1952), popularly as Edward Jayakody, is a Sri Lankan musician, singer and composer. Jayakody has directed the music for hundreds of Sinhala films and television serials and has also composed many songs for children's programming ("Koppara Koppara"). Jayakody won the Swarna Sanka Award in 1987 for Best Male Singer for the film ''Gedara Budun Amma''. He won Best Music Director in 1979 and 1980 for the plays ''Nidane'' and ''Aparadaya Saha Danduwama''. Lakshman Jayakody
Lakshman Jayakody (24 August 1930 – 30 August 2010) was a Sri Lankan politician, an SLFP stalwart and the Minister of Cultural and Religious Affairs in the Sri Lankan Cabinet from 1994 to 2000. Lakshman Jayakody was born 24 August 1930 the eldest child of Lionel Jayakody and Gwendoline. He commenced his education at Ladies' College, Colombo, where his mother was educated, before the family moved to Kandy, when he was admitted Trinity College. Later he gained admission to Ananda College, Colombo to do advance level studies, where he also represented the college XI cricket team and won colours in cricket. Jayakody joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) on 1 November 1954, and became the General Secretary of the SLFP Trade Union in 1959. In July 1960 he contested the 5th general parliamentary elections in the Divulapitiya electorate. He was successful, winning the seat by almost 5,000 votes.
