Jay Spurgeon
Jay Spurgeon (born July 5, 1976) is a former professional baseball pitcher who appeared in seven games for the Baltimore Orioles during the 2000 Major League Baseball season. Career A native of West Covina, California, Spurgeon attended Yosemite High School. He was selected by the Houston Astros in the 46th round of the 1994 MLB Draft but opted to play college baseball at the University of Hawaiʻi. In 1996, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Spurgeon was selected by the Orioles in the 8th round of the 1997 Major League Baseball draft The 1997 First-Year Player Draft, Major League Baseball's annual amateur draft of high school and college baseball players, was held on June 2 and 3, 1997. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL or Cape League) is a collegiate summer baseball wooden bat league located on Cape Cod in the U.S. state of Massachusetts.
