Jawad Fairooz
Jawad Fairooz ( ar, جواد فيروز غلوم فيروز) is a human rights defender and former Bahraini Member of the Council of Representatives (Bahrain), rendered stateless in 2011. Whilst in exile in the United Kingdom, Fairooz became the chairman of Salam for Democracy and Human Rights (Salam DHR). He founded Salam for Democracy and Human Rights in 2015. Council Of Representatives (Bahrain)
The Council of Representatives (''Majlis an-nuwab''), sometimes translated as the "Chamber of Deputies", is the name given to the lower house of the Bahraini National Assembly, the national legislative body of Bahrain. The council was created by the 2002 Constitution of Bahrain and consists of forty members elected by universal suffrage. 2006 Bahraini General Election
General elections were held in Bahrain in November and December 2006 to elect the forty members of the Council of Representatives. The first round of voting was held on 25 November, with a second round on 2 December 2006. Voter turnout was 72% in the first round, in which Shi'a and Sunni Islamists dominated, winning a clean sweep of the 29 seats that were decided in the first round, while liberal and ex-communist MPs lost all their seats. Four candidates of the left-wing National Democratic Action (also known as Wa'ad) made it through to second round run-off, which decided the remaining 11 seats. 2011 Bahraini Uprising
The 2011 Bahraini uprising was a series of anti-government protests in Bahrain led by the Shia-dominant and some Sunni minority Bahraini opposition from 2011 until 2014. The protests were inspired by the unrest of the 2011 Arab Spring and protests in Tunisia and Egypt and escalated to daily clashes after the Bahraini government repressed the revolt with the support of the Gulf Cooperation Council and Peninsula Shield Force. Matar Matar
Matar Ebrahim Ali Matar (also spelled Mattar Mattar; ar, مطر إبراهيم علي مطر; born 3 May 1976) is a Bahraini politician of the Al Wefaq party who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from October 2010 until his resignation in early 2011. Born in the village of Al Daih to a large family with diverse political views, Matar completed his secondary education in Bahrain and moved to Kuwait to pursue higher education. He remained there until 2002 when he returned to Bahrain and joined Al Wefaq political party. Matar was politically active, working within committees in the party and meeting with foreign officials. Ebtisam Al Saegh
Ebtisam al Saegh is a human rights defender from Bahrain with the organisation SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights (SALAM DHR). She is considered a "vital human rights advocate" at a time when freedom of expression is increasingly dangerous in Bahrain. Arrests and torture In November 2016 al Saegh was questioned by authorities under suspicion of “inciting hatred against the Bahraini regime” and “threatening public safety and security” for posts she had made on Twitter. In May 2017, Amnesty International documented the arrest, torture, including sexual assault, of Ebtisam al-Saegh at the Bahrain's National Security Agency (NSA). When al-Saegh was detained in May 2017, she was physically and sexually abused, and received threats to murder her and her children.
