Javier Rojo
Francisco Javier Rojo Garcia (born 2 March 1949) is a Spanish socialist politician, from 2004 to 2011, he served as President of the Spanish Senate. Early life Rojo Garcia was born on 2 March 1949 in the city of a village of Burgos. He moved to Vitoria-Gasteiz when he was very young. A lithographer and graphic artist by trade he moved into politics in 1976, and rose quickly through the ranks of the PSE-EE (Basque Socialist Party). He is married, and has two daughters. Political activity He has been a member of the UGT (Universal Trade Union) since 1976, the year after he joined the PSE. In 1979 he was elected Provincial Councillor of Álava, a post he held until 1983. In the 1982 general election he was elected to the Congress for the constituency of Álava, he would be re elected in the elections of 1986 and 1989. 1993 Spanish General Election
The 1993 Spanish general election was held on Sunday, 6 June 1993, to elect the 5th Cortes Generales of the Kingdom of Spain. All 350 seats in the Congress of Deputies were up for election, as well as 208 of 256 seats in the Senate. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party under Felipe González achieved the largest number of votes and seats for the fourth consecutive time, though it lost the absolute majority it had held in both chambers of the Cortes since 1982. In contrast, José María Aznar's People's Party won a large share of the vote, thus increasing their seats in both the Congress and the Senate and consolidating its position as the main opposition party. 2008 Spanish General Election
The 2008 Spanish general election was held on Sunday, 9 March 2008, to elect the 9th Cortes Generales of the Kingdom of Spain. All 350 seats in the Congress of Deputies were up for election, as well as 208 of 264 seats in the Senate. After four years of growing bipolarisation of Spanish politics, the election saw a record result for both ruling Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and opposition People's Party (PP), together obtaining more than 83% of the vote share—over 21 million votes—and 92% of the Congress seats. The PSOE under José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero benefitted from tactical voting against the PP and emerged as the most-voted party just 7 seats short of an overall majority. On the other hand, Mariano Rajoy's PP saw an increase in its vote share and seat count but remained unable to overtake the Socialists.
