Javid Taghiyev (boxer)
Javid Taghiyev ( az, Cavid Tağıyev; born 6 October 1981, in Lankaran) is a retired boxer from Azerbaijan. He participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics for his native European country. There he was stopped in the second round of the Middleweight (75 kg) division by Thailand's eventual bronze medalist Suriya Prasathinphimai. Taghiyev won the bronze medal in the same division six months earlier, at the 2004 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Pula, Croatia. The European Amateur Boxing Championships is the highest competition for boxing amateurs in Europe, organised by the continent's governing body EUBC, which stands for the ''European Boxing Confederation''. 2004 European Amateur Boxing Championships
The men's 2004 European Amateur Boxing Championships were held in Pula, Croatia, from February 19 to February 29. The 35th edition of thi bi-annual competition was organised by the European governing body for amateur boxing, EABA. A total number of 292 fighters from 41 countries competed at these championships. Lankaran ( az, Lənkəran, ) is a city in Azerbaijan, on the coast of the Caspian Sea, near the southern border with Iran. As of 2021, the city had a population of 89,300. It is next to, but independent of, Lankaran District. The city forms a distinct first-order division of Azerbaijan. Boxing at the 2004 Summer Olympics took place in the Peristeri Olympic Boxing Hall. The event was only open to men and bouts were contested over four rounds of two minutes each. Five judges scored the fighters in real time and the boxer with the most points at the end was the winner. Three days before the Games opening ceremony the International Olympic Committee announced that Kenyan boxer David Munyasia had tested positive for cathine and has been excluded from the event. Several medalists at the 2004 Olympics, including Amir Khan, Andre Ward, Gennady Golovkin, Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Guillermo Rigondeaux, later went on to become world champions in professional boxing. The middleweight boxing competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens was held from 14 to 28 August at Peristeri Olympic Boxing Hall. This is limited to those boxers weighing between 69 and 75 kilograms. Competition format Like all Olympic boxing events, the competition was a straight single-elimination tournament. This event consisted of 28 boxers who have qualified for the competition through various tournaments held in 2003 and 2004. The competition began with a preliminary round on 14 August, where the number of competitors was reduced to 16, and concluded with the final on 28 August. Suriya Prasathinphimai ( th, สุริยา ปราสาทหินพิมาย; born April 2, 1980) is a Thai boxer who competed in the Middleweight (75 kg) at the 2004 Summer Olympics and won the bronze medal. He qualified for the 2004 Athens Games by ending up in second place in the 2nd AIBA Asian 2004 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Karachi, Pakistan. In the final he lost to Pakistan's Ahmed Ali Khan. He is the grandson of Sook Prasathinphimai, a legendary Muay Thai kickboxer in the 50s. He also has a career in professional Muay Thai, under the name as "Suriya Sor Ploenchit" (สุริยา ส.เพลินจิต).
