Jasper Swift
Jasper Swift (died 20 January 1620) was the archdeacon of Cornwall and Archdeacon of Totnes. Educated at Christ Church, Oxford, he matriculated in 1590/1, graduating B.A. in 1594 and M.A. in 1599/1600. He was awarded B.D. and D.D. in 1615/16 and became rector of St. Erme, Cornwall in 1603 and of Powderham, Devon in 1612. Archdeacon Of Cornwall
The Archdeacon of Cornwall is a senior cleric in the Church of England Diocese of Truro. History and composition The archdeaconry of Cornwall was created in the Diocese of Exeter in the late 11th century. The area and the archdeacon remained part of that diocese until 15 December 1876 when the Diocese of Truro was established. The archdeaconry was then divided on 21 May 1878 to create the new Archdeaconry of Bodmin. Today, the archdeaconry of Cornwall consists of the deaneries of Carnmarth North, Carnmarth South, Kerrier, Penwith, Powder, Pydar and St Austell (Powder deanery includes the Isles of Scilly). The Archdeacon of Totnes or Totton is the senior ecclesiastical officer in charge of one of the oldest archdeaconries in England. It is an administrative division of the Church of England Diocese of Exeter and under the oversight of the Bishop suffragan of Plymouth. History The first recorded archdeacon of Exeter occurs in 1083, around the time when archdeacons were first appointed in Britain. Around that time, the Diocese of Exeter was divided into four archdeaconries: Exeter, Cornwall, Totnes (or Totton) and Barnstaple (or Barum). This configuration of archdeaconries within the diocese remained for almost 800 years, until the creation of the independent Diocese of Truro from the Cornwall archdeaconry. On 22 March 1918, the archdeaconries were reconfigured and the Archdeaconry of Plymouth created from Totnes archdeaconry. Presently, the diocese operates an informal 'area scheme' such that responsibility for roughly half the diocese is delegated to each suffragan bishop: special o ... Christ Church ( la, Ædes Christi, the temple or house, '' ædēs'', of Christ, and thus sometimes known as "The House") is a constituent college of the University of Oxford in England. Founded in 1546 by King Henry VIII, the college is uniquely a joint foundation of the university and the cathedral of the Oxford diocese, Christ Church Cathedral, which both serves as the college chapel and whose dean is ''ex officio'' the college head. Archdeacons Of Cornwall
An archdeacon is a senior clergy position in the Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic Church, Syriac Orthodox Church, Anglican Communion, St Thomas Christians, Eastern Orthodox Church, Eastern Orthodox churches and some other Christian denominations, above that of most clergy and below a bishop. In the High Middle Ages it was the most senior diocesan position below a bishop in the Catholic Church. An archdeacon is often responsible for administration within an archdeaconry, which is the principal subdivision of the diocese.
