Monticello is the largest city and the county seat of Jasper County, Georgia, United States. The city includes historic buildings such as the Jasper County Courthouse, Monticello High School and the Monticello Historic District. The population was 2,657 at the 2010 census. It is southeast of Atlanta. History Monticello was founded in 1808 as seat of the newly formed Jasper County. The city was named after Monticello, the estate of Thomas Jefferson. Jasper County is a county located in the central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,588, up from 13,900 in 2010. The county seat is Monticello. Jasper County is part of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. History This area was inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. At the time of European-American settlement, it was inhabited by the Cherokee and Muscogee Creek peoples, who became known as among the Five Civilized Tribes of the Southeast. The county was created on December 10, 1807, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly with land that was originally part of Baldwin County, Georgia. Shady Dale is a town in Jasper County, Georgia, United States. The population was 249 at the 2010 census. History Shady Dale was founded ''ca.'' 1880 on the site of a former Creek Indian settlement. The name "Shady Dale" was descriptively applied. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Shady Dale as a town in 1889. Geography Shady Dale is located in northeastern Jasper County at (33.399562, -83.589937). Georgia State Routes 83 and 142 intersect in the center of town.
