Jason Robinson (musician)
Jason Robinson (born September 20, 1975) is an American jazz saxophonist and academic. Early life and education Born in Northern California, Robinson was raised in the Sierra Nevada region. He attended the University of Southern California for one year before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in jazz studies and philosophy from Sonoma State University. Robinson later earned a Master of Arts and PhD in music from the University of California, San Diego. Career Robinson was mentored by the bassist Mel Graves, who also recorded on ''From the Sun'', Robinson's first album as a leader. He was a member of the groups Cannonball and Groundation, and founded Circumvention Music. In San Diego, he worked extensively with a trio that featured bassist Rob Thorsen and drummer Brett Sanders. Robinson has developed long-term collaborative groups, including Cosmologic and Trummerflora. In 2002, Robinson's album ''Tandem'', a series of duos, was released. Marty Ehrlich
Marty Ehrlich (born May 31, 1955) is a multi-instrumentalist (saxophones, clarinets, flutes) and is considered one of the leading figures in avant-garde jazz. Biography Though born in St. Paul, Minnesota, the portion of Ehrlich's youth spent in St. Louis, Missouri, was particularly important. As a high school student at University City High School in nearby University City, the teenager came into contact with the influential Black Artists' Group (BAG, 1968–72) which was modelled after the AACM in Chicago. Later, during formal studies at the New England Conservatory, Ehrlich developed a particularly close relationship with pianist Jaki Byard. It was here that he was most deeply schooled in traditional jazz forms, as well as Western European classical music. Anthony Davis (composer)
Anthony Davis (born February 20, 1951) is an American pianist and composer. He incorporates several styles including jazz, rhythm 'n' blues, gospel, non-Western, African, European classical, Indonesian gamelan, and experimental music. He has played with several groups and is also professor of music at University of California, San Diego. Davis is perhaps best known for his operas; he has been called "the dean of African-American opera composers." His better known compositions include '' X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X'', which was premiered by the New York City Opera in 1986; ''Amistad'', which premiered with the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 1997; and '' Wakonda's Dream'', which premiered at Opera Omaha in 2007. His opera '' The Central Park Five'' premiered on June 15, 2019 at the Long Beach Opera Company in California. It won him a Pulitzer Prize for Music on May 4, 2020.
