Jascha Heifetz Competition
International Jascha Heifetz Competition is a competition for violinists of all nationalities, which is held in Lithuania. The first International Jascha Heifetz Competition for Violinists was held in 2001, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of violinist Jascha Heifetz. The competition was organised by the Lithuanian Cultural Foundation together with the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.Vilniuje baigėsi pirmasis tarptautinis Jaschos Heifetzo vardo smuikininkų konkursas. Jascha Heifetz
Jascha Heifetz (; December 10, 1987) was a Russian-born American violinist. Born in Vilnius, he moved while still a teenager to the United States, where his Carnegie Hall debut was rapturously received. He was a virtuoso since childhood. Fritz Kreisler, another leading violinist of the twentieth century, said after hearing Heifetz's debut, "We might as well take our fiddles and break them across our knees." He had a long and successful performing career; however, after an injury to his right (bowing) arm, he switched his focus to teaching. Late in life, Heifetz became a dedicated teacher and a champion of socio-political causes. He publicly advocated to establish 9-1-1 as an emergency phone number, and crusaded for clean air. He and his students at the University of Southern California protested smog by wearing gas masks, and in 1967, he converted his Renault passenger car into an electric vehicle. The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in Vilnius, Lithuania, is a state-supported conservatory that trains students in music, theatre, and multimedia arts. History Composer Juozas Naujalis founded a music school in 1919 in Kaunas. This school was reorganised into the Kaunas Conservatory in 1933. In 1949 the ''Kaunas Conservatory'' and the ''Vilnius Conservatory'', founded in 1945, were merged into the ''Lithuanian State Conservatory''. The State Conservatory was renamed the ''Music Academy of Lithuania'' (LMA) in 1992, and in 2004 it became the ''Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre'' (LMTA). ''Lietuvos aidas'' (literally: ''Echo of Lithuania'') is a daily newspaper in Lithuania. It was established on September 6, 1917 by Antanas Smetona, and became the semi-official voice of the newly formed Lithuanian government. When the government evacuated from Vilnius to the temporary capital, Kaunas, it ceased publication.
