Major General Jarvis D. Lynch Jr., USMC, (born February 17, 1933) retired in 1991 as the commanding general, Marine Corps Recruit Depot/commanding general, Eastern Recruiting Region, Parris Island, South Carolina. Early years A native of Glassboro, New Jersey, Lynch graduated from Glassboro High School in 1951. Military career He received his B.S. degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1956, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He also holds an M.S. degree in management technology from American University, conferred in 1973. Upon completion of The Basic School, Quantico, Virginia., in March 1957, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines in Hawaii. 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines
The 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines (2/26) is an inactive infantry battalion of the United States Marine Corps. They were part of the 26th Marine Regiment and 5th Marine Division and fought during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. They were activated again for the Vietnam War but were deactivated after the war and remain inactive today. A Marine Corps Officer Selection Officer (OSO) leads a team of Marines and civilian employees in the recruitment of college students and graduates for a Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Responsibilities An OSO is responsible for the oversight of all functions of the Officer Selection Team. It is their responsibility to ensure that all students who have the desire to be Marine Corps Officers are physically and mentally prepared for the rigors of the Officer Candidate School (OCS). Programs The OSO has many different programs to offer to university students. All training is paid and takes place in Quantico, Virginia at the OCS.
