Jarle Simensen
Jarle Simensen (born 23 March 1937, in Os, Hedmark) is a Norwegian historian. He took the cand.philol. degree at the University of Oslo in 1966, and worked as a research assistant at the same university, a research fellow at the Norwegian Research Council and Institute of Social Research and, briefly, associate professor (''førsteamanuensis'') at the University of Trondheim before taking the dr.philos. degree in Trondheim in 1976. He was then a professor there from 1980 to 2004. He returned to the University of Oslo in 1996 to hold the position of adjunct professor (''professor II''); he is currently professor emeritus there. Os, Hedmark
Os is a municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Østerdalen. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Os i Østerdalen. The municipality is located to the west of the municipality of Røros and to the south of the municipalities of Midtre Gauldal and Holtålen in Trøndelag county. In Innlandet county, Os is located to the west of the municipality of Tolga and to the north of the municipality of Engerdal. The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters ( no, Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi, DNVA) is a learned society based in Oslo, Norway. Its purpose is to support the advancement of science and scholarship in Norway. History The Royal Frederick University in Christiania was established in 1811. The idea of a learned society in Christiania surfaced for the first time in 1841. The city of Trondhjem had no university, but had a learned society, the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, established in 1760. The purpose of a learned society in Christiania was to support scientific studies and aid publication of academic papers. The idea of the Humboldt-inspired university, where independent research stood strong, had taken over for the instrumental view of a university as a means to produce civil servants.
