Japonski Island
Japonski Island ( tli, Yak'w Kashaneixí, russian: остров Японский, ja, ヤポンスキー島) is a small island in the city of Sitka in the Alexander Archipelago of southeastern Alaska, United States. It lies across the Sitka Channel from Sitka's central business district. The Russian colonists named the island ''Japonski'' (Russian for "Japanese") after some Japanese fishermen who were stranded there in 1805 (unnamed Russians returned them to Yezo (Hokkaidō) in 1806).* Japonski Island is connected to Baranof Island and Sitka by the O'Connell Bridge. Before the bridge there was a ferry system similar to that which currently exists in Ketchikan. The shore boats that maintained the transportation link between Japonski and the rest of Sitka were the ''Donna'', ''Teddy'', ''Dorothy'', ''Diane'', and ''Arrowhead''. John O'Connell Bridge
The John O'Connell Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Sitka Channel located in Sitka, Alaska. The bridge connects the town of Sitka on Baranof Island to the airport and Coast Guard Station on Japonski Island. Until the bridge was completed in 1971, the commute was only achievable through a ferry service. The bridge is named after John W. O'Connell, a former mayor of Sitka. The two-lane bridge is in total length, with a main span of . The bridge was also the United States' first vehicular cable-stayed girder spanned bridge. The four steel pylons carry two three-cable sets, each carrying a section of the bridge deck. Special consideration was given to the bridge's aesthetics due to its proximity to nearby Castle Hill. Approximately 4000 vehicles cross the bridge every day, up from the approximate 1000 shore boat passengers per day prior to the bridge's completion. USCGC ''Kukui'' (WLB-203) is the third cutter in the ''Juniper''-class of seagoing buoy tenders and is the third ship to bear the name. The Indian Health Service (IHS) is an operating division (OPDIV) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport
Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport is a state-owned, public-use airport located west of the central business district of Sitka, a city and borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. The airport is named after Sitka's former mayor Rocky Gutierrez. It features a single terminal with jetway with air service operated year-round by Alaska Airlines and seasonally by Delta Air Lines regional affiliate Delta Connection operated by SkyWest Airlines. There is a single paved runway located on a causeway that juts off Japonski Island. Deceased tuberculosis patients from the nearby SEARHC/Mt. Ketchikan ( ; tli, Kichx̱áan) is a city in and the borough seat of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough of Alaska. It is the state's southeasternmost major settlement. Baranof Island
Baranof Island is an island in the northern Alexander Archipelago in the Alaska Panhandle, in Alaska. The name Baranof was given in 1805 by Imperial Russian Navy captain Yuri Lisyansky, U. F. Lisianski to honor Alexander Andreyevich Baranov. It was called Sheet’-ká X'áat'l (often expressed simply as "Shee") by the native Tlingit people, Tlingit people.
