Japan Nite
Japan Nite is an annual music event in North America which began in 1996, featuring Japanese rock, pop, and alternative music artists. Originally centered around South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, the event expanded in later years to include multi-city tours of the United States, and has often been the first US performance for the participating artists. History Japan Nite was conceived by Hiroshi Asada, former manager of Pizzicato Five, and Audrey Kimura, the founder of the independent Japanese label Sister Benten Online, Benten. Asada organized a showcase called Psycho Night (a play on the Japanese word ''saiko'', for ''"''awesome") at the 1992 New Music Seminar in New York City featuring only Japanese acts, including Pizzicato Five. Yoshiki (musician)
, known as Yoshiki, is a Japanese musician, songwriter, composer and record producer. He is best known as the leader and a co-founder of the visual kei rock band X Japan, for which he is the drummer, pianist and main songwriter. Petty Booka
Petty Booka is a Japanese musical group that consists of two women, Petty and Booka, who sing and play ukulele. Most of the band's early output consisted of cover versions of Hawaiian ukulele classics. The two also do many covers of well-known rock songs. Petty Booka was part of Sister Benten Online, a record company run by Audrey "Benten" Kimura. The band is based in Japan, and has toured of Europe and North America. In 1997, the original Petty left the duo, and a new Petty filled her spot. In November 2002, the original Booka also left to take care of her baby and was replaced by Candy Eyeslugger's Maiko. The current "Petty" and "Booka" hail from Chiba and Saitama, Japan. The band has performed several times at the U.S. music festival SXSW as part of the Japan Nite event. Bleach (Japanese Band)
Bleach (known as Bleach03 in North America) was an all-female noise rock trio from Okinawa, Japan. In June 2009, Bleach announced on their website that they had disbanded. Their final album, ''Bleach Stone'', was released on July 7, 2009. A "Best of" album was released in Japan on February 22, 2010, and came with a DVD video of their last show. Bleach was known for their raw and energetic live performances, and the band toured the United States several times as part of the Japan Nite tour. Their song "The Head That Controls Both Right And Left Sides Eats Meats And Slobbers Even Today" appeared in an episode of the television series ''Mr. Robot''. Mummy The Peepshow
Mummy the Peepshow is an all-girl garage punk/noise punk band from Osaka, Japan. Formed in 1994, they recorded four full-length albums and were featured in many album compilations. In 2000, they performed at the U.S. music festival SXSW as part of Japan Nite. They had been part of Audrey Kimura's Tokyo-based BENTEN Label until they formed their own label, Triangle Records, in 2001. They went on hiatus in 2003 but Maki reformed the band with a new line-up in 2018 and have performed several shows since then. Number Girl
was a rock band formed in Fukuoka, Japan in August, 1995 by guitarist and vocalist Shutoku Mukai. They first disbanded in 2002 following bassist Kentaro Nakao's departure from the band. Number Girl played fast, guitar-driven rock similar to the Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Hüsker Dü. Over the course of seven years their sound evolved greatly, serving as a basis for Mukai's post-Number Girl project, Zazen Boys. In February 2019, it was announced that the band would be reuniting to perform at Rising Sun Rock Festival 2019 in Ezo. Although the first day of the festival was cancelled and Number Girl did not perform, they had already announced a four-date Japanese tour by this time, beginning at Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall on August 18. The Mad Capsule Markets (originally known as The Mad Capsule Market's and Berrie) were a Japanese band that formed in 1985 and were active until 2006. The band became known for their experimental style, which melded various kinds of electronic music and punk rock. Cocco
is a female Japanese pop / folk rock singer. Early life Cocco went to many ballet auditions, hoping to become a professional ballerina. She went to singing auditions to earn the traveling expenses for a ballet audition in Tokyo. She did not pass it, but after impressing the judges, she was later signed by Victor Entertainment. Career Cocco made her debut on an indie label under the name "Cocko" with a self-titled EP ''Cocko'' on November 21, 1996. A track from the EP, ''Sing a Song ~No Music, No Life~'', was used in an advertising campaign for Tower Records Japan. On March 21, 1997, Cocco changed the official spelling of her name to "Cocco" and released her major label debut single ''Countdown''. A full-length album followed shortly after. Husking Bee are a Japanese powerpop/punk band formed in 1994. According to Oricon, HUSKING BEE’s member were Isobe Masafumi (on Vocals), Kudo "Tekkin" Tetsuya(on Bass) and Hiramoto Leona (on Drums). They debuted in 1995 by "NOT SUPERSTITIOUS III". Hirabayashi Kazuya, today the lead singer and guitarist to the band Fine Lines, joined as a new member in 2000. Despite having many Japanese young fans, they dissolved without explaining the reasons behind their decision on 6 March 2005. The band reunited in February 2012. ''LA Weekly'' is a free weekly alternative newspaper in Los Angeles, California. It was founded in 1978 by Jay Levin, who served as president and editor until 1991.
