Japan Islanders
The Japan Islanders are an independent professional baseball team based in Lyon Mountain, New York. They play in the Empire Professional Baseball League (EPBL), which is not affiliated with Major League Baseball. History The Puerto Rico Islanders joined the Empire Professional Baseball League for the 2017 season. They played their first season as a traveling team until the league finalized a ballpark and opposing team travel arrangements. In their debut the Islanders fell short of reaching the playoffs by one game. Tony Rodríguez was hired to manage the Islanders for the 2018 season. The team finished the regular season in second-place with a 27–18 record. On August 12, 2018, the Islanders won the Zakari Cup (EPBL) championship by besting the New York Bucks in the final series. Lyon Mountain, New York
Lyon Mountain is a hamlet and census-designated place located in the town of Dannemora in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 423 at the 2010 census. The northern slopes of Lyon Mountain are in the southern part of the community, with the summit to the south in the town of Saranac. The Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility, a minimum security prison, was located in the community. The facility closed in 2011, and has been purchased by a Canadian who has mined sand for hydrofracking from the site. Geography The hamlet of Lyon Mountain is located at (44.728863, -73.907905). The Empire Professional Baseball League (EPBL) is an independent baseball league that began play in 2016. The Empire League plays a 40-game regular season followed by a five-game post season. The four-team league consists of four teams from Upstate New York. League offices are in Tampa, Florida. History The Empire League is a replacement of the North Country Baseball League, which folded after one season (and was itself a last-minute replacement for the East Coast Baseball League, which disbanded before the start of the 2015 season). An independent baseball league is a professional baseball organization in the United States or Canada that is not overseen by Major League Baseball and is outside the Minor League Baseball clubs affiliated to it. Luis Antonio Rodríguez (born August 15, 1970 in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico) is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) shortstop and current manager for the Tigres de Quintana Roo of the Mexican League. He played for the Boston Red Sox during the season. Playing career Listed at 5' 11", 165 lb., Rodríguez batted and threw right-handed.
