Jannie De Groot
Adriana Elisabeth "Jannie/Janny" de Groot (born 4 January 1930) is a retired Dutch swimmer. In 1947 and 1950 she won the national titles and became third in the 200 m breaststroke at the European Aquatics Championships. She competed in the same event at the 1948 Summer Olympics and finished fifth in the final won by Dutch teammate Nel van Vliet. Jannie's brother, Daan de Groot Daniël ("Daan") de Groot (25 May 1933 – 8 January 1982) was a road bicycle and track cyclist from the Netherlands, who represented his native country at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. LEN European Aquatics Championships
The European Aquatics Championships is the continental Aquatics championship for Europe, which is organised by LEN—the governing body for aquatics in Europe. The Championships are currently held every two years (in even years); and since 2022, they have included 5 aquatics disciplines: Swimming (long course/50m pool), Diving, Synchronised swimming, Open water swimming and High diving. Prior to 1999, the championships also included Water polo, which beginning in 1999 LEN split-off into a separate championships. The open water events are not held during the Olympic year. The Championships are generally held over a two-week time-period in mid-to-late Summer; however, in the most recent Summer Olympics years (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020), the Championships were moved to the Spring to be moved away from the Summer Olympic Games. The 1948 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XIV Olympiad and also known as London 1948) were an international multi-sport event held from 29 July to 14 August 1948 in London, England, United Kingdom. Petronella "Nel" van Vliet (17 January 1926 – 4 January 2006) was a breaststroke swimmer from the Netherlands. She won gold medals in the 200 m breaststroke at the 1947 European Aquatics Championships and 1948 Summer Olympics. In 1973, she was inducted to the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Biography Nel van Vliet was born in Hilversum and learned to swim only around the age of 16 (c. 1942), during World War II. In 1943, she became national champion in the 200 m breaststroke, her favorite discipline. She improved significantly after the end of the war, setting 13 world records in various breaststroke and medley relay events in 1946–1947, and winning national championships in 1946 and 1948. Her international career was hindered by that she was not registered with the Dutch authorities at birth. Daan De Groot
Daniël ("Daan") de Groot (25 May 1933 – 8 January 1982) was a road bicycle and track cyclist from the Netherlands, who represented his native country at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. In the 1952 Olympics, De Groot was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the men's 4,000 m team pursuit, alongside Adrie Voorting, Jan Plantaz and Jules Maenen. In 1954, he became a professional road cyclist, which he remained until 1962. During the 1955 Tour de France, De Groot was in the thirteenth initially dropped by the peloton, and had problems with the heat. When he passed a field with cabbage, he took two leaves and put them in his neck and on his head, to protect him from the sun. He regained his strength, and was able to get back to the peloton.
