Janet Paul
Dame Janet Elaine Paul (née Wilkinson; 9 November 1919 – 28 July 2004) was a New Zealand publisher, painter and art historian, based in Wellington. She was married to Blackwood Paul and they had a publishing business together specialising in New Zealand poetry. After her husband's death, she was courted by Denis Glover, one of the poets they published. From 1971 to 1980, she was art librarian at the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington. Janet and Blackwood Paul had four daughters, one of whom, Joanna Margaret Paul, became a well-known New Zealand artist, poet, publisher and film-maker. Wellington
Wellington ( mi, Te Whanganui-a-Tara or ) is the capital city of New Zealand. It is located at the south-western tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range. David Blackwood Paul
David Blackwood Paul (1908–1965) was a New Zealand bookseller and publisher. He was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1908. He was married to Janet Paul and they had a publishing business together specialising in New Zealand poetry. Their publishing firm was sold to Longman in 1967, and continued publishing as Longman Paul until 1972. Denis Glover
Denis James Matthews Glover (9 December 19129 August 1980) was a New Zealand poet and publisher. Born in Dunedin, he attended the University of Canterbury where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts, and subsequently lectured. He worked as a reporter and editor for a time, and in 1937 founded the Caxton Press, which published the works of many well-known New Zealand writers of the day (including Glover's own poetry). After a period of service in World War II, he and his friend Charles Brasch founded the literary magazine ''Landfall'', which Caxton began publishing in 1947. Glover's later years were marred by alcoholism, forcing him to resign from Caxton Press and subsequent roles, and impacting on his personal life. Caxton Press is a printing company founded in 1935 in a partnership between Denis Glover and John Drew. The press printed the work of many New Zealand writers who have since become familiar names in New Zealand literature. It originally appeared in 1932 as the Caxton Club Press. Joanna Margaret Paul
Joanna Margaret Paul (14 December 1945 – 29 May 2003) was a New Zealand visual artist, poet and film-maker. Early life and education Paul was one of four daughters of pioneering New Zealand publisher Blackwood Paul and artist and writer Janet Paul. Paul attended Samuel Marsden Collegiate School from 1959 until 1962, then the University of Waikato in 1963, studying history, French and English. In 1964, she travelled to London with her family for a year, studying at the Sir John Cass School. On returning to New Zealand, she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Auckland in 1968; in 1967 she enrolled at Elam School of Fine Arts, studying under teachers such as Colin McCahon, Greer Twiss and Tom Hutchins, and alongside fellow students Christine Hellyar, Marte Szirmay and Leon Narbey.
