Jane Bunford
Jane Bunford (26 July 1895 – 1 April 1922) was one of the tallest women ever measuring at the time of her death (adjusted for spinal curvature). She was the tallest woman in the world during her lifetime. Early life Bunford's parents were John Bunford (14 March 1856 – 10 December 1916) and Jane Bunford (Nee Andrews) (April 1857 – 1934) of Bartley Green, Birmingham, UK. Her father was a metal caster. Accident According to the Guinness Book of Records at the age of 11, Bunford had a head injury. It is believed that the injury permanently damaged her pituitary gland, releasing an excess of growth hormone which sent her growth out of control. Bartley Green
Bartley Green is a residential suburban area and electoral ward in Birmingham, England, south west of the city centre. The ward is part of the Birmingham Edgbaston constituency and is represented in parliament by Labour Co-operative MP Preet Gill. History Bartley Green was first noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ''Berchelai''. This means either the birch tree wood or the clearing in the birch trees (from the Old English "beorc leah"). Gigantism ( el, γίγας, ''gígas'', "giant", plural γίγαντες, ''gígantes''), also known as giantism, is a condition characterized by excessive growth and height significantly above average. In humans, this condition is caused by over-production of growth hormone in childhood, resulting in people up to in height. It is a rare disorder resulting from increased levels of growth hormone before the fusion of the growth plate which usually occurs at some point soon after puberty. This increase is most often due to abnormal tumor growths on the pituitary gland. Gigantism should not be confused with acromegaly, the adult form of the disorder, characterized by somatic enlargement specifically in the extremities and face. Trijntje Cornelisdochter Keever (10 or 16 April 1616 – 2 July 1633), nicknamed De Groote Meid (in English, ''The Big Girl''), is alleged to be the tallest female person in recorded history, standing 9 Amsterdam feet or tall at the time of her death at age seventeen. Trijntje Keever was the daughter of Cornelis Keever and Anna Pouwels. Cornelis was a Dutch skipper and Anna was his maid; he married her on May 24, 1605. St. Michael and All Angels' Church, Bartley Green is a parish church in the Church of England located in Bartley Green, Birmingham. History St. Michael and All Angels church is located within Bartley Green. It was built as a chapel of ease to St. Laurence, Northfield. Construction of the church commenced in 1838 and was consecrated in 1840. It was by the architect Isaac Newry. At the time it was a small L-shaped, Gothic building. It was enlarged in 1878 with the addition of sanctuary and chancel. In 1933, it became a chapel of ease to St. Gabriel's Church, Weoley Castle. A Conventional district was attached to St. Michael's in 1950, which became a parish in 1966. The church was demolished in 1968 after standing derelict for around two years.
