Jandek On Corwood
''Jandek on Corwood'' is a documentary about veteran reclusive folk/blues artist Jandek. Unlike most popular music documentaries, the subject himself is not seen in the film in any way; instead, various critics, disc jockeys and journalists, many of whom have had some contact with the notoriously reclusive artist, discuss Jandek, his equally mysterious independent record label Corwood Industries, and his music (which reached 39 albums at the end of 2004). While Jandek himself does not appear in the movie (except in the form of the pictures on many of his album covers and in excerpts from the only phone interview he has ever done in his career, with musician and writer John Trubee for ''Spin Magazine'' in 1985), he did authorize and endorse the project through Corwood Industries (any correspondence to the artist is usually signed "Corwood" rather than "Jandek"), allow the filmmakers to use whatever recordings from his discography they saw fit, and suggest people that could be inter ... Gary Pig Gold (born May 30, 1955 in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, record producer, filmmaker, author and journalist. His fanzine ''The Pig Paper'' was Canada's second independently published music magazine, and among the recording artists he has worked with are Pat Boone, Dave Rave, Endless Summer, Simply Saucer and Shane Faubert. Gold has written many books on popular music and has contributed to dozens of magazines as well as seven books in the multi-genre MusicHound album guide series. ''Blue Corpse'' is the fifteenth album by Jandek, and his second for 1987. Primarily an all acoustic album with an unknown accompanist (identified only as "Eddie" during the instrumental break in "Down at the Ball Park"), it is considered by many to be one of the more accessible and cohesive albums in Jandek's oeuvre. Album cover The cover of Blue Corpse completes the series of images that began with ''Telegraph Melts'' (1986) and was continued with ''Modern Dances'' (1987). While the cover of ''Modern Dances'' shows the artist standing still and looking forward, the cover of Blue Corpse shows the artist in mid stride, producing a blurred image of the artist. ''White Box Requiem'' is the 25th album by Jandek, and his only for the year 1996. Released as Corwood Industries #0763, it is essentially a "concept album" about death, loss, and a man who opens a mysterious white "Pandora's box", which some have speculated is a coffin. There are 14 songs with acoustic guitar, half of them with vocals. The instrumental pieces are sparse and experiment with echo, with "restless" passages that music critic Andre Salles has described as "consistently inventive atonal plonking that never sits still". After not releasing any music in 1995, Jandek returned with ''White Box Requiem'' the following year. According to a rare interview with Jandek that appeared in ''The Wire'', the album had originally been planned as a song-by-song response to ''Exile in Guyville'' by Liz Phair. ''Put My Dream on This Planet'' is the 29th album by Jandek. It was his only new release of 2000 (note that there were numerous reissues of the oldest material). The first of three consecutive a capella albums, it is Corwood Industries #0767. Initially thought by fans to have been recorded on a voice-activated microcassette recorder, Jandek clarified in his 2014 cover interview for ''The Wire'' that he recorded this album, as well as the two a capella followups, ''This Narrow Road'' and ''Worthless Recluse'', on a standard consumer-grade cassette recorder, and that the pauses in the recording were removed per his request with a noise reduction gate during the mastering stage. Critical reception ''Exclaim!'' wrote that "Jandek sounds old, with a deep, grainy, Johnny Cash-like voice that appears to be recorded by a portable microphone, as opposed to a crisp studio recording."
