The Jan Smuts Stadium is an athletics and football stadium in the Arcadia suburb of East London, Buffalo City. The stadium is named in honour of Jan Smuts, and is adjacent to the Buffalo City Stadium. Football related tenants During the 2009–10 football season, it was named as Blackburn Rovers FC's home venue, competing at the Eastern Cape province of Vodacom League. When the team after the season won promotion for National First Division, they however moved their home venue to the adjacent Buffalo City Stadium. Arcadia is a suburb in Pretoria, South Africa that is known for its historical buildings, embassies and hotels. FC Buffalo (South Africa)
FC Buffalo is an association football club based in the Southernwood suburb of East London, in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The club was founded in June 2006, and during their first four years, they played in the SAB Regional League, the fourth level of South African football. In June 2010, they bought the Castle League franchise of The Guys, and hereby bought a promotion to play in the Vodacom League. Their first season at this level proved to be very successful. Buffalo City is a metropolitan municipality situated on the east coast of Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Field Marshal Jan Christian Smuts, (24 May 1870 11 September 1950) was a South African statesman, military leader and philosopher. In addition to holding various military and cabinet posts, he served as prime minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 to 1924 and 1939 to 1948. Smuts was born to Afrikaner parents in the British Cape Colony. He was educated at Victoria College, Stellenbosch before reading law at Christ's College, Cambridge on a scholarship. He was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1894 but returned home the following year. In the leadup to the Second Boer War, Smuts practised law in Pretoria, the capital of the South African Republic. He led the republic's delegation to the Bloemfontein Conference and served as an officer in a commando unit following the outbreak of war in 1899. Buffalo City Stadium
Buffalo City Stadium (also known as the BCM Stadium) is a multi-use stadium in East London, South Africa. It is currently used mostly for Rugby Union matches and is the home stadium of Border Bulldogs. The stadium holds 16,000 people. The stadium has undergone three name changes. Originally, it was named Border Rugby Union Grounds, which was changed to the Basil Kenyon Stadium, after the Springbok player who captained the Springboks on a successful 3-month tour of England in 1951. The ABC Motsepe League, previously known as the Vodacom League between 1998 and 2012, was founded in 1998 as the current Second Division and the overall third tier of South African football. The competition is regulated by SAFA, and until 2012 had been sponsored by mobile telecommunications company Vodacom. It features 144 teams in total, divided into 9 divisions, borders decided by the 9 geo-political provinces of South Africa: Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu Natal, Northern Cape, Western Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West. The National First Division (NFD), officially known as the Motsepe Foundation Championship for sponsorship reasons, is the second-highest league of South African club association football, football after the South African Premier Division. Both the NFD and South African Premier Division are organised by the Premier Soccer League.
