Jan Roth
Jan Roth (10 November 1899 – 4 October 1972) was a Czech cinematographer. During World War I he served in the Austro-Hungarian Navy. Roth started his career as a lighting technician at the New German theatre in Prague. In 1926 he became a chief lighting technician at Karel Lamač's Kavalírka film studio. Roth later served as Otto Heller's assistant on Lamač's films. In 1934 he started to work as a cameraman. He soon became of the most prolific cinematographers of the Czechoslovak cinema. Following the German occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939 he continued to work for both Czech and German productions at Barrandov Studios. Roth often collaborated with directors Otakar Vávra and Martin Frič. He was noted for his ability to create Chiaroscuro effects. Náchod (; german: Nachod) is a town in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 19,000 inhabitants. It is known both as a tourist destination and centre of industry. ''Love Premiere'' (german: Liebespremiere) is a 1943 German comedy film directed by Arthur Maria Rabenalt and starring Hans Söhnker, Kirsten Heiberg and Fritz Odemar. ''Goodbye, Franziska'' (german: Auf Wiedersehn, Franziska!) is a 1941 German romance film directed by Helmut Käutner and starring Marianne Hoppe, Hans Söhnker and Fritz Odemar. It portrays the relationship between a globetrotting reporter and his devoted wife. The film was remade in 1957. After World War II, the Allied Forces banned the film from being shown in the German-occupied area because of its ending, which reminded the viewers to support the war effort. Director Käutner was eventually able to convince officials that the propaganda sequence was in no way a reflection of his political ideology and was added at request of Nazi censors.
