Jan Korringa
Jan Korringa (31 March 1915 – 9 October 2015) was a Dutch American theoretical physicist, specializing in theoretical condensed matter physics. He also contributed to the KKR Method. Education and career Korringa received his undergraduate degree from the Delft University of Technology. In 1937, Korringa went to Leiden University, Netherlands, to pursue graduate studies. Due to the closure of Leiden University, Korringa returned to Delft University of Technology. In 1942, he gave a Doctor of Philosophy from Delft University of Technology and published his thesis, ''Onderzoekingen op het gebied algebraïsche optiek'' (''Essays in the area of science optics''). In 1946, Korringa became an associate professor at the University of Leiden. He was a protégé of Hendrik Kramers, who had been the first protégé of Niels Bohr; a large influence on his interest in quantum mechanics. Coherent Potential Approximation
The coherent potential approximation (or CPA) is a method, in physics, of finding the Green's function of an effective medium. It is a useful concept in understanding how sound waves scatter in a material which displays spatial inhomogeneity. One version of the CPA is an extension to random materials of the muffin-tin approximation, used to calculate electronic band structure in solids. Bloch's Theorem
In condensed matter physics, Bloch's theorem states that solutions to the Schrödinger equation in a periodic potential take the form of a plane wave modulated by a periodic function. The theorem is named after the physicist Felix Bloch, who discovered the theorem in 1929. Norman Rostoker
Norman Rostoker (August 16, 1925 – December 25, 2014) was a Canadian plasma physicist known for being a pioneer in developing clean plasma-based fusion energy. He co-founded TAE Technologies (formerly known as Tri Alpha Energy) in 1998 and held 27 U.S. Patents on plasma-based fusion accelerators. The Korringa–Kohn–Rostoker method, a theory in solid-state physics, is named after him. Early life and career Rostoker studied at the University of Toronto, where he received his master's degree in physics in 1947, and received his doctorate in 1950 at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, where he did research from 1948. Walter Kohn
Walter Kohn (; March 9, 1923 – April 19, 2016) was an Austrian-American theoretical physicist and theoretical chemist. He was awarded, with John Pople, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1998. The award recognized their contributions to the understandings of the electronic properties of materials. In particular, Kohn played the leading role in the development of density functional theory, which made it possible to calculate quantum mechanical electronic structure by equations involving the electronic density (rather than the many-body wavefunction). Multiple Scattering Theory
Multiple scattering theory (MST) is the mathematical formalism that is used to describe the propagation of a wave through a collection of scatterers. Examples are acoustical waves traveling through porous media, light scattering from water droplets in a cloud, or x-rays scattering from a crystal. A more recent application is to the propagation of quantum matter waves like electrons or neutrons through a solid. As pointed out by Jan Korringa, the origin of this theory can be traced back to an 1892 paper by Lord Rayleigh. An important mathematical formulation of the theory was made by Paul Peter Ewald.
