Jan J. Dominique (born January 25, 1953, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti) is a Canadian writer, journalist, radio host, and teacher from Haiti. Biography Jan J. Dominique was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1953. She started writing stories and poems at the age of 12. She moved to Quebec, Canada in 1970, where she completed a Master's degree in literature and art history and then worked for a trade union in Montreal. In 1978, Dominique returned to Haiti, where she worked in education, teaching at high school and university level, and contributing towards an educational reform project with the National Institute for Pedagogy. Dominique began a career in journalism because her father, Jean Dominique was also a journalist and owned a radio station. She worked at Radio Haiti-Inter, Radio Haiti alongside her teaching career until 1980, when the Haitian government closed the station, forcing journalists into exile, including her father. Port-au-Prince ( , ; ht, Pòtoprens ) is the capital and most populous city of Haiti. The city's population was estimated at 987,311 in 2015 with the metropolitan area estimated at a population of 2,618,894. The metropolitan area is defined by the IHSI as including the communes of Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Cite Soleil, Tabarre, Carrefour and Pétion-Ville. The city of Port-au-Prince is on the Gulf of Gonâve: the bay on which the city lies, which acts as a natural harbor, has sustained economic activity since the civilizations of the Taíno. It was first incorporated under French colonial rule in 1749. The city's layout is similar to that of an amphitheater; commercial districts are near the water, while residential neighborhoods are located on the hills above.
