James Wieghart
James Gerard Wieghart ( ; August 16, 1933 (Niles, Michigan) – February 21, 2010 (Clare, Michigan)) was an American editor and newspaperman and a minor figure in the Iran Contra affair. Career Wiegart grew up mostly in Niles, Michigan. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving mostly in Alaska, from 1951 to 1954. He attended Central Michigan University before graduating from the University of Wisconsin. He worked at the ''Milwaukee Journal'' and the ''Milwaukee Sentinel'', which appointed him as Washington bureau chief in 1966. Around the same time, in 1965 was press secretary for William Proxmire, U.S. Senator from Wisconsin. In 1969, Wieghart joined the ''New York Daily News'', for which he would cover the Nixon, Ford and Carter administrations. He reported on the U.S. Department of Defense during the waning years of the Vietnam War (writing from Vietnam for several weeks in 1971) and covered the White House during the Watergate scandal. Niles, Michigan
Niles is a city in Berrien and Cass counties in the U.S. state of Michigan, near the Indiana border city of South Bend. In 2010, the population was 11,600 according to the 2010 census. It is the larger, by population, of the two principal cities in the Niles- Benton Harbor Metropolitan Statistical Area, an area with 156,813 people. Niles lies on the banks of the St. Joseph River, at the site of the French Fort St. Joseph, which was built in 1697 to protect the Jesuit Mission established in 1691. After 1761, it was held by the British colonization of the Americas, British and was captured on May 25, 1763, by Native Americans in the United States, Native Americans during Pontiac's Rebellion. The British retook the fort but it was not re-garrisoned and served as a trading post. Lake City, Michigan
Lake City is a city in and the county seat of Missaukee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 836. Lake City is locally known as the " Christmas Tree Capitol" because of the millions of Christmas trees produced annually. History The community's first settler, Daniel Reeder, built his cabin on Muskrat Lake, now Lake Missaukee, in 1868. On January 22, 1872, Reeder was the name of post office open and the last name of its first postmaster, Daniel. The county selected Reeder by a one-vote margin as the county seat in 1873. The community became a station of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad. The community was renamed on January 25, 1877 to Lake City. Lake City was incorporated as a village and platted in 1889. Silver Spring, Maryland
Silver Spring is a census-designated place (CDP) in southeastern Montgomery County, Maryland, United States, near Washington, D.C. Although officially unincorporated, in practice it is an edge city, with a population of 81,015 at the 2020 census, making it the fifth-most populous place in Maryland after Baltimore, Columbia, Germantown, and Waldorf. The Contras were the various U.S.-backed and funded right-wing rebel groups that were active from 1979 to 1990 in opposition to the Marxist Sandinista Junta of National Reconstruction Government in Nicaragua, which came to power in 1979 following the Nicaraguan Revolution.
