The ''James W. Elwell'' was a 19th-century two-masted Sandy Hook Pilots, Sandy Hook pilot boat, built in 1867 by John A. Forsyth at Mystic, Connecticut, Mystic Bridge, New London, Connecticut for New Jersey and Sandy Hook maritime pilots. She raced for a $1,000 prize at the Cape May, New Jersey, Cape May Regatta in 1873. She went ashore and was shipwrecked on North Beach Haven, New Jersey in 1875. Construction and service The ''James W. Elwell'' was a pilot-boat No. 7, built in 1867 by John A. Forsyth, at Mystic, Connecticut, Mystic Bridge, New London, Connecticut for New Jersey and Sandy Hook pilots. Forsyth, built the yacht L' Hirondelle, which was owned by S. Dexter Bradford. The cabin of the boat was made of hard and choice woods put together by John Bennett of Mystic Bridge. She had of canvas in her sails. The dishes and glassware were prepared with her name on it. James William Elwell
James William Elwell (August 27, 1820 – September 2, 1899) was a 19th-century American businessman and philanthropist. He was well known as one of the oldest shipping merchants in New York having lived in Brooklyn for over forty years. Elwell was the owner of ''James W. Elwell & Co.,'' a shipping firm at 57 South Street, Manhattan. He was one of the oldest members of the New York Chamber of Commerce. He was known as a philanthropist who helped to found some of Brooklyn's best institutions. Elwell and his wife built the James W. and Lucy S. Elwell House in the national historic district in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. The pilot boat ''James W. Elwell'' was named in his honor. Early life James W.
