James Tierney (politician)
James E. Tierney (born April 12, 1947) is an American lawyer, lecturer in law at Harvard Law School, and founding director oState AG an educational resource on the office of state attorney general. He served as Attorney General of Maine from 1980 until 1990. At 25, Tierney was elected to the Maine House of Representatives as a Democrat from Lisbon, Maine. After eight years in the Maine Legislature, where he was elected Majority Leader at the age of 29, Tierney became the Maine Attorney General. He served in that capacity for ten years during which time he was active on a wide variety of state and national issues. In 1986 Tierney ran as the Democratic Nominee against John R. Mckernan in Maine's Gubernatorial Election. Tierney lost by over 40,000 votes. After leaving office of Attorney General in 1990, he began a career as a consultant to attorneys general. Maine Attorney General
The Maine Attorney General is the chief legal advisor and prosecutor of the State of Maine. The constitutional basis of the office is Article IX, Section 11 of the Maine Constitution, and the holder of the position is chosen biennially by the Maine Legislature in joint session. Maine is the only state to select its attorney general in such a manner. The powers of the Attorney General are derived from the Maine Revised Statues Annotated, Title 5, Chapter 9. These include representing the State in civil actions, investigating and prosecuting homicides, advising district attorneys, and providing written opinions on matters of law at the request of the Governor or the Legislature. The Attorney General is empowered to appoint deputy and assistant attorneys general, who serve at the Attorney General's pleasure. 1986 Maine Gubernatorial Election
The 1986 Maine gubernatorial election took place on November 4, 1986. Incumbent Democratic Governor Joseph Brennan was term limited and ineligible to seek re-election. First district Congressman John McKernan defeated Democratic Party challenger James Tierney as well as former Republican turned Independent Sherry Huber and former Portland, Maine city manager John Menario, making McKernan the first Republican to win The Blaine House since 1966. William Diamond unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination.
