James Thomson (entomologist)
James Livingston Thomson (March 15, 1828 – July 2, 1897) was an American entomologist who specialised in Coleoptera. James Thomson was of independent means and for most of life lived in France. His collection of Cerambycidae, Buprestidae, Cetoniinae and Lucanidae was eventually sold to René Oberthür He was a Member of the Société entomologique de France. James Thomson is not to be confused with Carl Gustaf Thomson (1824–1899) also an entomologist. Carl Gustaf Thomson
Carl Gustaf Thomson (13 October 1824, in Malmöhus County, Malmöhus – 20 September 1899, in Lund) was a Sweden, Swedish entomologist. Thomson became a student in the University of Lund in 1843, graduated in 1850 and became associate professor of zoology there in 1857. In 1862 he became the curator of the entomological department of the Zoological Museum and in 1864 became a lecturer in entomology as well. An 1872 scholarship enabled him to travel to the continent for scientific study. He was offered the post of Director of the Entomological Museum in Berlin, but he declined. Carl Gustaf Thomson was the author of ''Coleoptera Scandinaviae'' (ten volumes, 1859–68), ''Skandinaviens inseckta'' (1862), ''Scandinavia Hymenoptera'' (five volumes, 1871–79) and ''Opuscula Entomologica'' (22 bands, 1869–97) He also published descriptions of the insects collected on the voyage of the Fregatten Eugenies (HSwMS Eugenie), the first Swedish vessel to circumnavigate the world. Émile Deyrolle
Émile Deyrolle (1838–1917) was a French naturalist and natural history dealer in Paris. The business was originally owned by his naturalist grandfather, Jean-Baptiste Deyrolle who opened his shop in 1831 at 23, Rue de la Monnaie. Émile’s father Achille Deyrolle ran the business for many years. Émile took over in 1866. The address from 1881 (and now) was (and is) 46, Rue du Bac, the former home of Jacques Samuel Bernhart. Hercule Nicolet (18 January 1801 Neuchâtel – 16 September 1872) born Louis-Ami-Hercule Nicolet, was a Swiss lithographer, natural history illustrator, librarian at ''École nationale vétérinaire d'Alfort'' from 1861 to 1870, and entomologist who specialized in Thysanura and Collembola. Hercule Nicolet was the son of Bénédict-Alphonse Nicolet (1743-1807). The Société entomologique de France, or French Entomological Society, is devoted to the study of insects. The society was founded in 1832 in Paris, France. The society was created by eighteen Parisian entomologists on January 31, 1832. The first (honorary) president was Pierre André Latreille (1762-1833) who was elected unanimously and established the goal of the society to contribute to and progress the development of entomology in all its aspects. Entomology () is the scientific study of insects, a branch of zoology. In the past the term "insect" was less specific, and historically the definition of entomology would also include the study of animals in other arthropod groups, such as arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans. This wider meaning may still be encountered in informal use. René Oberthür
René Oberthür (1852, Rennes – 27 April 1944) was a French entomologist who specialised in Coleoptera. With his brother Charles Oberthür he worked in "Imprimerie Oberthür" the very successful printing business founded by his father François-Charles Oberthür. René and Charles supplied free bibles, missals, catechisms and other printwork to missionaries in exchange for insect specimens. In addition they purchased on a large scale, acquiring almost all the large collections sold during their lifetime.
