James Thompson (chess Player)
James Thompson (23 September 1804, London – 2 December 1870, New York) was an American chess master. Early life Born in London, he arrived in New York, where formed the New York Chess Club in 1839. Chess career He participated in the First American Chess Congress at New York 1857, and lost a match to Paul Morphy (0 : 3) in the first round. He also lost other matches to him; casual (0 : 5) in 1857, two formal (3.5 : 5.5) in May/June 1859 and (6 : 10) in October 1859, and casual (1 : 3) in 1860 (Morphy gave odds of a knight in three latter matches). He drew a match with Charles D. Mead (1.5 : 1.5) in 1857, and played several times in New York Chess Club tournaments, losing to Frederick Perrin in 1854, 1857, and 1859, and James A. The American Chess Congress was a series of chess tournaments held in the United States, a predecessor to the current U.S. Chess Championship. It had nine editions, the first played in October 1857 and the last in August 1923. Paul Morphy
Paul Charles Morphy (June 22, 1837 – July 10, 1884) was an American chess player. He is considered to have been the greatest chess master of his era and is often considered the unofficial World Chess Champion. A chess prodigy, he was called "The Pride and Sorrow of Chess" because he had a brilliant chess career but retired from the game while still young. Commentators agree that he was far ahead of his time as a chess player, though there is disagreement on how his play ranks compared to modern players. Morphy was born in New Orleans to a wealthy and distinguished family. He learned to play chess by simply watching games between his father and uncle. His family soon recognized the boy's talent for the game and encouraged him to play at family gatherings, and by the age of nine he was considered to be one of the best players in the city. Frederick Perrin
Frederick Perrin (5 December 1815 – 27 January 1889) was an American chess master. Perrin was born in London, Great Britain and was descended from a Swiss family. He went to the United States in 1845. He played twice in the American Chess Congress at New York 1857 (Paul Morphy won) and Chicago 1874 (George Henry Mackenzie won). He participated several times in the New York Chess Club Tournament, winning in 1859. Perrin had been a professor of languages at Princeton College. He had mastered French and German alongside English. In the 1850s he was president of the New York Chess Club. In later years he was an honorary member of the Brooklyn Chess Club where he defeated McKenzie in a game a few weeks before his death.
