James Taylor (Nova Scotia Politician)
James Taylor (1771 – January 15, 1801) was a merchant, seaman, tanner and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Queen's County in the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia from 1799 to 1801. He was the son of William Taylor, a loyalist who came to Shelburne, Nova Scotia in 1783 and then moved to Liverpool in 1795. (His father William is buried in the Old Burying Ground (Halifax, Nova Scotia). In 1793, he married Susanna, the daughter of Benajah Collins Benajah Collins (October 29, 1734 – 1820) was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia. Queens County is a county in the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Nova Scotia. History Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Liverpool, the county seat of Queens County, was founded in 1759 by the New England Planters. Founded for the most part by New England settlers, Liverpool maintained strong ties with the American colonies until the sudden outbreak of the American Revolution. Shelburne, Nova Scotia
Shelburne is a town located in southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada. History Shelburne lies at the southwest corner of Nova Scotia, at roughly the same latitude as Portland, Maine in the United States. The Mi'kmaq call the large and well-sheltered harbour ''Logumkeegan'' or ''Sogumkeagum.'' The first Europeans to make a settlement on these shores were the French Acadians. They set up a small fishing settlement known as Port Razoir in the late 17th century, named after the harbour's resemblance to an open razor. Early European settlers had small subsistence farms, but most of the inhabitants' income from that time to the present has been derived from the sea. The Acadian fishing settlement was abandoned after repeated raids from New England colonists during Queen Anne's War in 1705, in which five Acadians were taken prisoner, and again in 1708. Liverpool is a Canadian community and former town located along the Atlantic Ocean of the Province of Nova Scotia's South Shore. Old Burying Ground (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
The Old Burying Ground (also known as St. Paul's Church Cemetery) is a historic cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is located at the intersection of Barrington Street and Spring Garden Road in Downtown Halifax. History The Old Burying Ground was founded in 1749, the same year as the settlement, as the town's first burial ground. It was originally non-denominational and for several decades was the only burial place for all Haligonians. (The burial ground was also used by St. Matthew's United Church). In 1793 it was turned over to the Anglican St. Paul's Church. The cemetery was closed in 1844 and the Camp Hill Cemetery established for subsequent burials. The site steadily declined until the 1980s when it was restored and refurbished by the Old Burying Ground Foundation, which now maintains the site and employ tour guides to interpret the site in the summer. Benajah Collins
Benajah Collins (October 29, 1734 – 1820) was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Queen's County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1784 to 1797. He was born in Chatham, Massachusetts, the son of Joseph Collins and Abigail Crowell, and later settled in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Collins married Susannah Tracy. He was involved in the fisheries and coastal trade, owning a number of ships. Collins was also a justice in the Inferior Court of Common Pleas for Queen's County. He was elected to the assembly in a 1784 by-election held after Nathaniel Freeman's seat was declared vacant for non-attendance. In 1797, Collins went back to Massachusetts, settling in Danvers. He returned to Liverpool in 1815 to dispose of his property there; he died in Danvers several years later. His son George also served in the provincial assembly. William Benajah Taylor (June 10, 1794 – ca 1853) was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Liverpool township from 1836 to 1851 in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly as a Conservative. Background He was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, the son of James Taylor (Nova Scotia politician), James Taylor and Susanna Collins. In 1816, he married Trephana, the daughter of Joseph Barss.
