James Strong (college President)
Dr. James Woodward Strong (September 29, 1833 - February 24, 1913), an American theologian and scholar, was the first president of Carleton College, Minnesota. Despite lifelong illness and injury, Strong was a highly active man throughout his life, juggling multiple professional and personal occupations. Strong was born on September 29, 1833 in Brownington, Vermont, one of three sons of Elijah Gridley Strong and Sarah Ashley Partridge. Despite ill health as a child, James began his working life at the age of fourteen with a yearlong assistantship in a printing office. He followed this service with two years in the Burlington bookstore of Edward Smith, during which time he also began studying Latin, a critical element of advanced study in a 19th-century education. At the age of 17, Strong took a position teaching school in a mountain school district, the start of his professional life in academia. James Strong is a British television and film director and writer, best known for his work on ''Broadchurch'' for which he was BAFTA-nominated for Best Director Fiction 2015. He trained at Granada TV and has directed episodes of the shows '' Holby City'' and ''Doctors'', as well as seven episodes of ''Doctor Who'' and two episodes of its spin-off series ''Torchwood''. His work on the ''Doctor Who'' episode "Voyage of the Damned" won him a BAFTA Cymru award for Best Director in 2008. In 2007, he directed the autobiographical documentary '' Elton John: Me, Myself & I'' and in 2008 he directed three episodes of ''Bonekickers''. James Strong (theologian)
James Strong (August 14, 1822 – August 7, 1894) was an American academic, biblical scholar, lexicographer, Methodist theologian and professor, best known for being the creator of '' Strong's Concordance''. Biography Strong was born in New York City and graduated, in 1844, as valedictorian from Wesleyan University. Subsequently, he was mayor of his hometown on Long Island. Later, having settled in Flushing, New York, he pursued biblical studies, held various local offices, and organized, built, and was the president of the Flushing railroad. In 1856 the Wesleyan University granted him the degree of Doctor of Divinity (D.D.). From 1858 until 1861, Strong was both Acting President and Professor of Biblical Literature at Troy University. In 1868 he became Professor of Exegetical Theology at Drew Theological Seminary, where he remained for twenty-seven years. James Hooker Strong (26 April 1814 – 28 November 1882) was a rear admiral of the United States Navy, who served during the American Civil War. Biography Strong, born in Canandaigua, New York, was appointed a midshipman in the Navy while he was a student in the Polytechnic College at Chittenango, New York, on 2 February 1829. He made his first cruise on the Brazil Station in from 1833 to 1835. After various cruises, he commanded the store ship in 1859. On the outbreak of the Civil War in April 1861, Strong was promoted to commander, and commanded and in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron in 1861 and 1862, and in the West Gulf Blockading Squadron from 1863 to 1865. At the Battle of Mobile Bay, he was the first to ram the Confederate ironclad and received high commendation for his initiative and valor, and a promotion to captain. Jimmy Strong (musician)
Jimmy Strong (August 29, 1906 – April 1977) was an American jazz reedist. While he is best known as a clarinetist, he occasionally played tenor saxophone as well. Career Strong was based in Chicago as a teenager, performing in Lottie Hightower's Nighthawks. Around 1925, he did a national tour with a traveling revue and stayed in California for a time, freelancing with several groups. Upon his return, he joined Carroll Dickerson's orchestra, where he worked with Louis Armstrong; he appears on Armstrong's Hot Fives recordings. In 1928, he also worked briefly with Clifford King. In the 1930s, he played with Cassino Simpson, Zinky Cohn, and Jimmie Noone, in addition to his own bands.
